- a country in the middle east who controls the suez canal was just overthrown
- front page news is the imf calling for a new currency
- the president just declared the death of the u.s. housing finance system (which is what, the ENTIRE economy?)
- "official" 9% unemployment, which means probably 20% in real life
- the fricking stock exchange is being sold to germany

War is peace,
Freedom is slavery,
Ignorance is strength,
Dow Index measures the health of the economy
I cannot fathom how real market forces are not poised to take that flash-traded, bailed-out, manipulated index down hard. One of these days....

Ridiculous isn't it.
What's sad is that I spent about 5 minutes on my local news website arguing with some moron who was basically saying the DOW's climb since 2009 is great and is attributable to Obama and how anyone who doesn't have a 401k is an idiot. When I told him he could have done better with silver he told me that I must be poor because I don't have a 401k. Asshats like that guy are why the dow is up.

The Dow is being papered over to prop it up. Remember only a few years ago, when Zimbabwe's economy was destroyed and their currency inflated away, they had the best performing stock market in the world, with massive % gains every day.

It's called a Bull market
All news is considered a reason to buy which is opposite of a Bear market where you sell on the news to try and get out of positions.
With the Bulls in control
If the numbers come out showing the economy isn't recovering as fast as expected, they look at it as good news because the Fed won't raise rates and the economy has more up potential left.
If the numbers come out showing the economy is improving, that is good news because the traded companies will see higher earnings due to increased business therefore justifying higher stock prices.
I personally see things are a little different right now and isn't just a case of the Bulls seeing green ahead and believe it is being manipulated by the big player because when you have a Bull market and it keeps climbing in conditions such as you see the economy is in today, you have lots of cautious investors standing on the sidelines shaking their heads in disbelief (just like you are)
eventually they get tired of seeing everyone but themselves making money and jump in with both feet, when all the money on the sidelines has been put in play, the big money boys that manipulate the market turn the market around and walk away with a boatload of cash, they then ride the market down making even more money until it reaches a point they agree on to once again reverse directions to lure people back in.

Greed and fear work amazingly well!
High Frequency Trading, Insider knowledge, free money from turning bonds, and cheap money at the Fed window helps too. ;)
