MADISON, Wis. —
Gov. Scott Walker says the Wisconsin National Guard is prepared to respond wherever is necessary in the wake of his announcement that he wants to take away nearly all collective bargaining rights from state employees.
Walker said Friday that he hasn't called the Guard into action, but he has briefed them and other state agencies in preparation of any problems that could result in a disruption of state services, like staffing at prisons.
Walker says he has every confidence that state employees will continue to show up for work and do their jobs and he's not anticipating any problems.
His plan would require higher pension and health insurance contributions and remove bargaining rights except in a limited way over wages.

What collective bargaining rights is Walker going to take away?
The contract they are currently working under actually ended mid 2009 :conf:
If he uses the National Guard for prison staff as he says, the inmates will eat those little pimple faced boys for lunch

If it's necessary then I have no problems.
There shouldn't be any unionization of public servants at the expense of the taxpayers.

here's what he wants to do: take away all of their bargaining rights in terms of negotiating salaries + benefits. He wants everything frozen and pegged to the cpi from here forward. they could only get raises bigger than the rate of the cpi or their benefits raised more than the cpi rate if they took it to a state referendum and had a statewide vote by the people.
union people here are pissed. if you listen to the radio, it's like an election year. he's running ads about it, as are the unions. i'm staring to get flyers in the mail now to "call my representative an tell them it's time to treat the unions like the rest o wisconsin workers." the union ones say walker is "treating them like slaves." they're really vicious. i'll save the next ones i get and scan them.
we'll see what happens...

Pegging to inflation? No one in the real world has their pay pegged to inflation.
I think he would just have better luck in spearheading the downsizing the whole enchilada at an accelerated rate. You don't have to appease someone that is no longer working for you.

Pegging to cpi is even worse. They are dependent on the gov to tell them what the reality of prices are.
Private sector still doesn't peg to cpi.
He should just cut half of state gov. It would be fewer headaches in the long run.

he's pissed people off, that's for sure. also, union people here are angry at minnesota, because we had some loan from them that pawlenty wanted repaid all at once (to balance the budget over there) so he can look good when running for president. the union people that aren't pissed at walker are pissed at minnesota "because it's their fault walker is doing this." it's all very soap opera-ish.

If any state loaned ILL money, they would never see that back. :D
Why would WI borrow from MN? Why not float bonds?

the way i understand it, it's kind of like an irs "loan" that wisconsin owes minnesota for cross border workers. minnesota ended tax reciprocity. normally, we pay them back over about 17 months or so, but pawlenty said "nope," he wanted the full amount now to balance the state budget. here's a story about it:

The only problem with this is that contractors (at least in NY) hire illegals for ch33p and do a shit-stained job. There's even a minority quota to fill. None of these contractors pay benefits, there's no incentive to do a good job because guess what? At least when it comes to public jobs it's going to the cheapest, most minority bidder. Union guys who spent years in the union system precisely for the stability are out of fucking work. Something tells me that they do a bit better job than illegals scraped freshly off the street.
Ideally there'd be no unionized coalitions at the expense of taxpayers and the job would go to the contractor who has the best record. There's no money in the first place so shitty crews are put up to do a shitty job. They often go bankrupt halfway through and then union crews have to be brought in and re-do and/or finish the job - at the taxpayer's expense.
