I came down with strep throat a few days ago, and am currently on day three of almost no sleep due to the extreme pain involved in swallowing. I just got a call back from the doctor's office confirming my test results as positive for strep. I've been on penicillin for about 24 hours now, so I'm hoping the pain will start going away.

I don't know if I've ever endured such a painful infection as strep. I have to literally brace myself every time I swallow because the pain is to intense.

Sorry to hear this. Our kids had it last month.

Have you tried Tylenol or Advil yet? It seemed to help the kids. Also gargling w/ warm salt water.

"This too shall pass"!!

OH! And ice cream/popsicles too. ;)

big doses of vitamin C have anti-bacterial & anti-viral properties, minimum does is 3,000 mgs a day, but when your body is sick, you can handle much more.

Vitamin C is very safe, water soluble, you can take it until "bowel tolerance"

meaning, when you reach saturation, you will get some loose stools.

it will help a lot with discomfort, and shortening the infection

that brings back memories...only ever had strep once and that was long ago...got put on a "mycin" ...erythromycin I think.......worked great after a day I could feel results, no more of that dagger-like sharp pain everytime I'd swallow...and I think it was BID ....so I didn't have to take a PCN pill Q6°

Get some Colloidal Silver and put it in a spray bottle and spray it in the back of your throat. It's good stuff Kills Virus and Bacteria.

Thanks for the great responses. MNeagle, I've been eating lots of popsicles, they are like the only thing that soothes my throat. I didn't even think of colloidal silver, but that should have been the first thing I thought of. Been taking lots of vitamin C too.

Strep throat and ear aches are things that kids get regularly for which we adults don't always appreciate the level of pain and discomfort. Shortly you will experience the miracle of antibiotics. Let us know when that happens. Good luck.

I used to get it a lot as kid. In USSR we used to gargle with this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramicidin

It tastes absolutely horrible but it cured it within 1-2 days.
Long-term effects of any antibiotic exposure are grim.
That`s why I became a pain specialist doc in my leisure time ;)

I don't know if you have it in the US, but here you can buy this Pelargonium root extract, called Umcka or Umca, which you drop in a glass of water, I have had this sore throat with irritating cough the last 3 weeks, and a week ago I started taking this, immediate improvement, it has proven anti bacterial effect, against staph and strep throat, also works against Helicobacter pylori, together with some nutrients for the immune system. Has only a very vague taste and smell. Try it if you can find it. I guess one could make it self also, cheaply by mushing some pelargonium roots and let it sit in alcohol for some time.

I'm sorry you hurt, madfranks. My daughter, a professional soprano, swears by chloroseptic spray, and prefers the red stuff. NOT ME, it makes me gag. I'm more a spray with ST-37, which is labelled as okay for oral use, and is a topical antiseptic AND anesthetic.

Over the counter at your local hardware store. Your food will be tasteless because it numbs the tongue's tastebuds, but it sure will get after the sore throat and help you out. Also, put the ole heatpad on your neck and kick back. Surely there is some western or who-dun-it on the tube t'night.

Most folks have never heard of ST-37. One of the best kept OTC med out there, and one of the FEW labeled for oral use.

I'm also a Collodial Silver user/believer as well. PLUS, Nasal Crom (also OTC) will bring your post nasal drip to a stand still, but will sting your sinuses the first few times before it shuts down the drip factory, which is irritating your raw throat.

Forgot a classic Russian remedy for any kind of throat infection. Gargle with a few drops of iodine tincture dissolved in a glass of warm water plus some salt or baking soda, make sure it`s real, brown iodine tincture and not the discolored iodine.

Step does suck ass. I've had it a few times in my younger days. I recall the last time the doc provided me with a lidocaine gel that would coat the throat when swallowed. That really helped a lot with the pain of swallowing. It should be cheap and accessible. You may or may not need a prescription (probably do). I'd be asking about it if your still struggling to swallow.

Well, the strep is subsiding well enough, but my daughter just brought back cold/flu symptoms from school and in my weakened state I can already feel that I caught it. Seriously, how miserable is this, to get over strep and now be hit with something else. Ugh.
