That's pretty much my philosophy, but unfortunately I have a family.

But If I were single, I'd just carpe diem until the end and then bite the bullet. I'm just not for preps, or shooting practice, or any of the other things that are useful during the Apocalypse.

Thankfully my dh is one for preps and guns and loading up a bug out location.

I got a real bad doomer feelin' last night about the time of the OP.
I've been in a pretty zen place lately, and had a nice weekend, then all of the sudden I get a sharp headache, acted like a real prick to my GF, then went to bed and had apocalypse dreams all night, I kept waking up and thinking over and over again 'something big just happened, it has started'. I`ve had very long sober stints, one lasted 11 years. I alternate between being a somewhat beefy, extremely healthy-looking weightlifter and being a skinny, edgy cokehead or a doper. I`ve noticed having lived in 2 radically different images that statistically more women like me when I got that heroin chic than when I am looking like Van Damme. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I deal with mostly extremely brainy people and that includes women.
Brainy beautiful women are not looking for the physical types, they want excitement and I`m pretty exciting even without having to shoot speedballs every 10 minutes.

Actually diesel fuel tastes quite nice. Surprisingly pleasant.

I got blasted in the face with diesel at work one time, in my mouth, up my nose, and in the eyes. My first thought, was how clean and refreshing the diesel tasted. You don't want diesel in your eyes though..it coats your eyeballs and blurs your vision.

Yes, it is accelerating. But unless people are going to cut their wrists and end it all we're going for a wild ride. So the question is: how strapped in are you? At some point you have to step outside the inevitable and just live your life. Like Silver Shield borrowed from the Marines, you have to adapt, improvise, and overcome. It is accelerating and has been steadily for the past 100 years, it's just that now we're hitting critical mass. At some point in time soon critical mass will manifest itself in epic failure (SHTF) and recognizing this only gives you an advantage of retaining your freedom, dignity and semblance of life, it does NOT guarantee success. Prepping only gives you a better chance of weathering the storm, for no one can fully prepare for each and every potentiality.

Of course prepping is prudent, we all agree on that and we're ahead of 95%+ of most folks, but even if you haven't spent one cent on preps but have made yourself mentally aware of the possibilities/realities you're still 95%+ far ahead of the rest.

IMHO, it's a lot about what you do with whatever you have and how you're able to adapt and think during a crisis in motion. Some with less will be able to fare better than those with more but have little or no ability to critically think on the fly in shitty situations.

The market for cocaine is a fraction of what it once was, due to adderol being readily available as a prescription medication. Pain killers, heroine, even oxycontin...no money in them anymore, seboxin too readily available and inexpensive.
I used to work with a big ballin drug dealer and I got to be friendly with him. Word is he is now hurting for cash (he used to walk around with 20k in cash on him at all times, probably had a couple hundred K in his safe at home). You know when drug dealers can't make it anymore, the end is very near.

I would agree with the 1930's scenario but as everything now stands we have a knowledge base and an advanced technology capability that didn't exist in the 30's. The 40's and 50's ushered in radical changes in the 60's and we've never looked back. Yes, there are many things from the 30's and earlier that will by necessity come back into demand but our knowledge has precluded a total relapse into the stone age.

Being creative, doing with what you have, growing food, providing meat, etc..etc..is the flavor of what's to come.

There is always a weapon available if you know how to make it and how to use it.........knowledge is my friend.

Where in the 1920's we had 60% farmers (or knew how) we now have only 1%.

The financial disaster- including real estate, unemployment, stock market, debt surge to cover the deflation of default as well as government meddling- is well under way. It will reach a corner that it cannot escape.

Basic life needs: food, water, shelter. Part of shelter is heat/cooling. Oil prices will eat the strength of the economy and make people feel like they are walking through molasses. The answer to the financial crisis has been printing money. Frankly- I did not see that coming. I actually believed the lying bastards when they said they would not. Never again. But the next crisis they push us into is increased prices due to a devalued dollar. It will be an inflationary depression next. But that is not the end.

Food costs.... energy costs... all costs will accelerate up as money availability will not increase for the lower levels of societies. As bad as Amerikans will see it, much worse will hit other lands.


We are already seeing the unrest, rioting, government overthrows and we have not begun to accelerate in those areas yet.


Next will be wars. They will spring up over night.

Natural disasters are accelerating too.

Think about that, dys. If the scenario plays out like you think, then everyone will have time to do those things again. That's progress, right? I'm talking about net standard of living, so that would actually be a gain from today's standard.

We have taken so many advances for granted it's ridiculous. We couldn't be having this conversation in the 1970's, because we live in a different part of the country and there was no electronic forum to bring like-minded individuals together unless they lived in your local county.

The cell phone alone is a meteoric leap in standard of living. Have we all lost sight of how convenient it is to contact anyone, anytime, anywhere, instantly? Do you realize how much that has increased our personal safety alone? Do you think cell phones, internet, and our other global instantaneous communication will go away? Service may be interrupted, yes, but in the 1970's we didn't have it in the first place! K-os (thanks for the compliment, btw) wouldn't be able to be on a Mystery Tour, because she couldn't write code and transmit it to her boss as she traveled across the country, with them periodically making electronic deposits in her account, which are accessible to her from anywhere in the world. Are you kidding me?!?

No matter what happens, the human race will not lose the intellectual and technological gains that have accumulated. We're not going to have to re-invent things that took hundreds of years to discover. Their availability may be limited, and they may cost a lot, but compare that to them not existing!

In the 1970's, few people had air conditioning in their homes and less in their cars, half the cars on the road were rusted out, you had to take an hour to cook a meal in your oven, flying on airplanes was cost prohibitive, etc. Advances in communication, computers, electronics, medicine, etc. have been extraordinary. As I said, access to these things may become restricted or intermittent or expensive, but these are things that didn't exist!

And if you go back to the Depression, the contrast is off the charts. Exactly what do you expect will be worse than it was then? Most of the shit that we're stacking up as preps wasn't even available to the rich prior to the depression! You couldn't hoard a case of soft toilet paper or disposable razor blades, because they hadn't been invented yet

I think most of our preps are so that we don't have to suffer through long interruptions in availability of stuff, or so that we don't have to cut back as much on enjoying staple items, including food, when their cost goes through the roof. You won't have to ration your pasta when a box costs $10 or $20 in the store, because you'll have plenty of $1 pasta in your cupboard.

Having said that, I don't dismiss a more drastic Mad Max SHTF scenario, and I respect those trying to prepare for that, but the preparation for both scenarios is similar. I just think that scenario is very unlikely, like a 1% or 2% thing instead of an 70% or 80% thing.

For me, the "scariest" thing is the threat of interruption to medical supplies and service, either because of availability or cost. Everything else I view as a mere inconvenience, which I can soften with each additional thing I prep.

Yes, the dealers are lucky to afford their own dope plus some groceries, I know. Suboxone is hell, by the way. I tried it twice and couldn`t quit, had to go back on dope, then a bit of methadone and detox from meth finally.

The only way to survive in any society is to be useful in some way to some other human/humans. Preps should be skills, not things. Things can be and will be taken away from you. Things will be given to you by other humans, including food and a loaded gun if you prove to be useful to some humans.

Otherwise you can try to survive alone by yourself in a forest etc.

The lesson of Chernobyl is not that our govts are criminal, this we`ve known for a long time. I think most of our preps are so that we don't have to suffer through long interruptions in availability of stuff, or so that we don't have to cut back as much on enjoying staple items, including food, when their cost goes through the roof. The biggest lesson of heroin addiction:

If one decides to quit like I did, withdrawal is inevitable. Acute opiate withdrawal from a large habit is 1-2 weeks of non-stop screaming pain which sometimes drives people to suicide and in 95% of cases leads to a relapse. The only way to cope with this pain is to imagine even bigger pain and be thankful that yours is not THAT pain.

When gas hits 5$, imagine that it`s already 7$ and you`ll feel better, when it`s 7$ imagine it`s 10$ and so on.

Even with all that, it's not clear whether that adds up to worse, or just different. Some of the things on your list don't matter that much. It's not really an imposition if the population is fat or on drugs or can't graduate high school, or if we all owe $130,000 that will never get paid.

I don't mean to take any of this lightly; just trying to think about the real consequences. To the OP, it probably looks like it's accelerating, but one could argue it looked worse in 2008. And it probably still isn't as scary as it must have been early in WW2 when most of the world was at war. I still think we need to see a bigger sign of acceleration to think we are close to a dramatic shift. Maybe that's right around the corner, related to the unrest in the Middle East, or the Wisconsin union battle, or our monetary troubles. Something could snap from these issues, but I don't think the shoe has dropped yet. There's still time to position yourself.

I still think we need to see a bigger sign of acceleration to think we are close to a dramatic shift. Maybe that's right around the corner, related to the unrest in the Middle East, or the Wisconsin union battle, or our monetary troubles. Something could snap from these issues, but I don't think the shoe has dropped yet. There's still time to position yourself.

I did use the ban feature on GIM for a couple douchebags, but I haven't used it here for anyone.
I found that, even if I knew I hated a poster, other people would quote them and I would still see whatever they were saying due to the other peoples posts. Then I would get curious after reading half a conversation, and click on the "let me read this post" button, then I would get annoyed by the posts that I would go out of my way to read by the blocked user.

Does that make sense? No.

So I don't bother. If a poster gets under my skin, I either flat out state it, or just avoid them.
