A large quake has struck Christchurch, with reports of buildings and houses down and people trapped.

Witnesses said there were buildings down all around Cathedral Square in the city, with the church destroyed.

Witnesses said there would be "deaths" this time and their were reports of people being trapped in buildings across the city.

Amber Armitage said people were wandering around central Christchurch trying to get out but all exits from the city were blocked.

There was a strong smell of gas and clouds of dust.

A bus on Colombo St was "completely trapped under bricks" and people were working to free passengers trapped in it.

She said the quake felt much stronger than the first and thought the city was "irreparable".

Christchurch resident Sean Scanlon said it was by far the biggest shake since the original September 4 quake. The power was out and phone lines jammed.

Christchurch Hospital was being evacuated, a spokewoman for the hospital said.

Kay Cowlishaw said there was descruction everywhere.

"There's just water pouring out and sewerage, the whole garage is filled with water. There are cracks in the road.

Malcolm, a policeman from Darfield, was driving into town to a rowing event when the earthquake hit.

"I thought I had a flat tyre, then the place was shaking like hell."

He said oak trees in the Hagley Park had been uprooted and fallen across tents.

"I'm shaken, I'm at Christ College now and the school is a shambles - there's a lot of damage to the buildings.

"All of the water pipes are burst and it looks like a tsunami coming across the park."

"It's just unbelievable - just the sheer power."

His daughter was at Rangi Ruru school and she said students were running around screaming.

Malcolm's wife Jenny said the mayor was on the radio telling people not to go outside.

"It doesn't sound good - it sounds like this time people injured," she said.

Today's 6.3 earthquake would have felt more powerful for Christchurch residents than the original quake on September 4.

GNS duty seismologist Bill Fry said the acceleration of today's earthquake was larger in Christchurch city than the magnitude 7 earthquake last year.

"Instantaneously, they would have felt the greatest amount of shaking today. But the duration would not have been as long."

The earthquake happened at a shallow depth of five to six metres below ground.

In the city, the acceleration measured the same as the force of gravity.

In September, the largest acceleration felt around the city was on its eastern side, and this measured 0.8 times the force of gravity.

Today's earthquake did not last as long as the September quake, but Dr Fry said its duration had not been confirmed yet.

This is a map that highlights all the quakes with bubbles with a depth, magnitude, and felt area. It starts @ April of 2010.
I have yet to finish it. I am only 10 minutes into the graphic.

There are over 5000 quakes near Christchurch since April.

Edit: That is over 5000 quakes since September of 2010. Damn non-American calendar users.

Doctors had to either use a hacksaw and Swiss army knife to amputate a trapped man's legs or leave him to die.

After five hours of crawling through the pancaked Pyne Gould Corporation building on Tuesday, Dr Stuart Philip, 38, came across another survivor. But this time, the rubble could not be lifted and the man's trapped lower legs had to be cut off.

"There really wasn't any other option. Essentially the procedure was performed with a Swiss army knife. A builder arrived with a hacksaw. I know that sounds terrible, but that's all we had, " the Brisbane-based urologist said yesterday.

Another urologist performed the operation as she could squeeze in next to the man. She was traumatised and had since travelled back to Australia, he said.

An anesthetist was on hand to administer pain relief, but not enough to dull the agony.

Dr Philip last saw the 52-year-old man, known only as Brian, when he left him at Christchurch Hospital after performing CPR in the ambulance. He heard yesterday that the man was recovering in Waikato Hospital with his family.

"It was the most fantastic news."

But not everyone was lucky.

"My first job was actually climbing up into the top of the building where there was an Australian guy trapped. He subsequently died, we couldn't get him out."

The crew had saved about a dozen people by nightfall.

At one point, Dr Philip texted his wife Emma to say goodbye. The couple have two children, a son Sam, 5, and daughter Hannah, 3.

"At one stage when we were having aftershocks and the rubble was falling, we weren't sure if we were going to make it out alive. [My wife] sent me a terse text message telling me to get out of the building."

But he just could not leave.

Dr Philip, formerly of Hastings, studied in Christchurch and is a urological surgeon in Brisbane. He was at the annual Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand meeting with 250 doctors and 150 nurses.

Many helped treat casualties after the quake.

There's a lot of people still hoping for good news but time is getting short. They are throwing everything at it that they can though. I think there are more than 500 specialist in this kind of search and rescue hit the ground today from all over the world. I have to say I'm very impressed how the people have responded to this. The people organising the efforts. The tireless work of the people searching and digging. How they deployed care centres. How quickly they got water in and sanitation. How much information and really good advice was coming from the officials....that part really blew me away.

You mean the whites there didn't form machete gangs and attack and rape the rescuers like the animals in haiti did? I'm sure the actions and race of the victims is just a coincidence. :oo-->
