SARASOTA —
A homicide detective has been fired after declaring himself a sovereign citizen.
Tom Laughlin, of Parrish, filed court documents in April renouncing his U.S. citizenship and claiming he was not subject to federal law and he no longer had to pay taxes.
The 42-year-old detective was fired last week. According to an internal affairs report, supervisors accused Laughlin of associating with a hate group advocating violence, not answering questions honestly and using department computers to search websites on sovereign citizens.

Laughlin told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune that he filed the documents to make a political statement but he "didn't want to be involved in any kind of extremist movement." He plans to appeal.

"sovereign citizen" = oxymoron
A "citizen", by definition, is not "sovereign".

"Laughlin's beliefs put him directly at odds with his superiors, who had begun to watch out for sovereign citizens."
"The FBI listed those calling themselves sovereign as a domestic terror threat..."

First he was fired for alleged dishonesty okay.
He wasn't involved in a crime just labeled a terrorists for not understanding what he was doing.
The SPLC love to demonize the misguided.
He already lost his job now run him down for what benefit to society?
It possible this guy might have been more aware of than the average Joe six pack.

"The movement came to the Sarasota Police Department's attention last year, when an intelligence officer sent a bulletin warning officers to be wary of their interactions with "sovereign citizens.""

Interesting comments worth a read.
Here's one by a Darren Michaels
"unfortunately this cop by declaring himself a "sovereign citizen" is his first mistake since that term is a oxymoron of terms,.... that is like calling yourself a "free slave"....
He just did not create the proper docs and records....
he tried to claim to be a grantor, grantee and a secured party creditor.... he breached his own trust by commingling "at law" terms and "equity" terms - his paperwork contradicts itself...
He is partially correct since a "U.S. citizen" is a fiction of law... and state that a person who is born or naturalized (port of entry)
"A citizen of any one of the States of the Union, is held to be, and called a citizen of the United States, although technically and abstractly there is no such thing. Ex parte Knowles, 5 Ca. 300, 302 (1855)
the territories and states of the US are defined under 28 USC 3002 (15)(a), 28 USC 1322, 26 USC 3121, 26 USC 7701 - which do not include the 48 states.
United States Territories - I dont see any of the 48 states.. do you?
• American Samoa
• Baker Island -- (uninhabited, administered from Washington, DC)
• Federated States of Micronesia
• Guam
• Howland Island -- (uninhabited, administered from Washington, DC)
• Jarvis Island -- (uninhabited, administered from Washington, DC)
• Johnston Atoll -- (under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Air Force)
• Kingman Reef -- (uninhabited, under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Navy)
• Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
• Midway Islands -- (under the responsibility of the U.S. Dept. of Interior)
• Navassa Island -- (uninhabited, administered from Washington, DC)
• Palmyra Atoll -- (uninhabited, under the responsibility of the U.S. Dept. of Interior)
• Puerto Rico
• U.S. Virgin Islands
• Wake Island -- (under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Air Force)
• 10 mile radius of Washington DC
• Military bases
but when you declare yourself as a "US citizen" when in fact, you were never born or naturalized in the listed states or territories, supra, then you are an alleged felon pursuant to 18 USC 911 - you become a alleged felon (not convicted) when you sign a voters registration - look at question #2.................
18 USC 911 - "Citizen of the United States"
" Whoever falsely and willfully represents himself to be a citizen of the United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
"He who sleep on his rights, has none" - awake up America, or keep bending over - you been duped for decades......its your choice...."
