I think I mentioned this in another thread. Even if it seems to go unheeded, it plants a seed that has a chance to germinate as things begin to take shape, or they encounter some other "trigger" that hits home. That's why I recommend a soft sell, be aware of the point at which they become uncomfortable, and then back off.

BTW, don't let them fly off in a panic. With PMs at these lofty prices, suggest that they buy in incrementally. It will be a big turnoff for them to go all in here, and then take an immediate 20% hit on a correction. Tell them to buy some now, but also to plan to buy some this summer because the price may go down. That way, if there's a correction, they will respect your understanding of the situation even more.

the good thing they have going for them is that they live on a 90 acre farm with 3 spring fed ponds, a creek, + tons of wildlife (deer, geese, ducks, turkeys, + pheasant). the pons are also full of adult fish.

I don't know if they have cash liquid now or need to liquidate rentals to liberate cash, but if it's the latter, I'd just say don't mess around with "optimistic/greedy" asking prices on the property. It's a buyer's market extraordinaire, cash buyers are king because lenders have gotten so tight fisted, but cash buyers want a good price. Start at something "reasonable" but then within 2-3 weeks, lower asking price, then about every 2 weeks thereafter lower again maybe 5%... they don't want to be an "active listing" for 6+ months, growing stale. Think 60 days max, at whatever price the market demonstrates willingness to pay in that time. Be under contract by May or sooner, as the Summer selling season 2011 is just going to be another debacle of declining prices & dashed seller-hopes. Too many sellers are emotionally attached to what their place was worth in '06, or even '08, and when the market doesn't respond to their asking price, these sellers rationalize that the market is wrong and they're right... it's just suicide in a declining market like this-- like the guy whose stock is tanking but they keep messing around with limit orders, chasing the stock lower, rather than just getting out decisively with a market order. A quick, chunky asking-price reduction tells buyers the sellers mean business, and the listing also appears on a bunch of new radars of buyers who just monitor for price reductions.

If they happen to be at or under water on their rentals, by all means stop paying the mortgage & walk away-- foreclosure could take over a year and they're entitled to collect rent the whole time until title actually changes.

I told my older brother for years about 9/11 a and it was met with very stiff resistance until Jesse Venture gave the most watered down version of events and he was like "wow" so I burned a ton of documentaries for him and have made some progress on that front.

They woke up after viewing one of the same "endofamerica**.com" website (** replaced with numbers used for marketing purposes) and after surviving one of the brutal snowstorms that kept them stranded in their home for a week with minimal supplies.

After YEARS of trying to get them to do something, anything, and they finally pay attention to a slick marketer who sells the solution that I have been giving them for FREE! ??? Oh well, be happy that they finally are awake. They are on the beans, bullets, band-aids and bullion bandwagon now so that is all that matters.

I wouldn't get too carried away here. They are in fact doctors. which implies the ability to think things through in a rational way and the ability to set a long term goal and reach it. These are definately not widely seen attributes in today's bread and circus society.

Doctors are often very busy. So finally they come acrros Porter's "wake up" message (which btw is a pretty good fire alarm, although it has to be as he is trying to upsell something) and suddenly, despite what the mainstream and the govt would tell you, two plus two really does add up to four.

But as dys already said, the biggest concern is are they going to be ready to deal with a world completely changed when the fire alarms stop sounding and there's nothing left but the fires? Do they plan on using their skills to help people when nobody can afford to pay, or worse?

Maybe after a long weekend of buying preps, ammo and apmex orders, they should book a couple of tickets to Haiti and try out the reality of what it means to "wake up"

I watched the video; I can see why it would be influential to your parents and other "academically inclined" people. It's low-key, not flashy, and filled with specific examples. It carefully tells an unfolding story in an effective no-nonsense style.

What's hard to understand is how important any of these individual items are. It could be that some of them are anecdotal, or of trivial significance. But collectively it tells a convincing story.

To me, the big unknowns are the depth of impact and the timing, which is hinted at in the video. The impact could be significant but not catastrophic, and measured over multiple decades. Or it could be a severe and swift black swan event. As I've said, I lean toward the former, but respect the latter.

Both scenarios are worthy of preparation. But don't let your parents proceed in a state of panic. Being educated people with farmland and significant assets, they are way ahead of the game. Awareness alone is a huge advantage.

Glad your parents are aware of some of the things going on Chad. Funny how you planted the seeds but it took a scam artist to get them to sprout.

I would just try and temper your parents willingness to prep all at once. Sounds like they are fear motivated at this time and when fear is making the decisions they are usually poor ones. Since they already have land and plenty of assets they probably don't need to get everything done overnight. It might even be a good idea to keep rental properties if they are making them money.
