Is there really any difference between these two?

According to http://www.coinflation.com/ they have the exact same value of silver per coin. I was just wondering if there were any pro's/con's to each one, or should i be hoarding all i can get?! :)

Thanks in advance,

Morgans hold more numi value. However they are older and more circulated so they are worn and have slightly less silver.

In short (generally speaking), Peace dollars are better for silver based on weight. Morgans are better numi.

Another thing about Morgans that is nice is that people who don't understand true value sometimes think a VERY WORN Morgan dated in the 1800s has more value than an uncirculated Peace.

Value has less to do with the product but rather what impresses your client. In bartering it's good to know what the other wants. Everyone is an individual.

Why own anything associated with the "Morgan" name? What next? "Rockefeller" rounds?

The peace dollar is the only American currency past or present to bear the word Peace.

The obverse design on the Morgan provides considerably more detail than any of the design on the Peace dollar. IMO this makes visually assessing Morgans an easier task although Peace dollars have very distinct features to look for in assessment. I'm just saying you could hand someone a Morgan and a Peace of the exact same grade and more than likely the uneducated person would grade the Peace higher because there is less fine detail to be degraded.

Morgan dollars are notoriously faked albeit for specific dates and grades. I have no doubts Peace dollars get faked but I've not heard tale of it.

DC Comic character Two-Face flips a Peace dollar to decide your fate with. I don't know of any famed references to the Morgan in pop culture.

I see way more Morgans set in belt buckles than Peace dollars.

I vote for Peace dollars but I will buy either.

It's all silver. What else matters?

Are there easy ways to tell? Do you guys have methods of spotting fakes? I have thought about this before....

Well, the fakes I know of are 90% silver. So, if you are buying for silver content you have nothing to fear. Ring and magnet test and maybe dimension/weight test and move on.
If you are buying for numismatic purposes and you are in the higher end territory of key dates and mint states then you have an issue to contend with. Your first line of defense would be to buy from a reputable source; avoid eBay and avoid anything from China (I recommend buying numis locally only so you can look and feel and know the man 1st). The best way to spot fakes is to study fakes next to known authentic specimens. All of my local dealers have fake books for your perusal. In Morgans the letters on the circumference of the coin tend to get misspaced and/or crooked. Also the detailing of the feathers and arrows on the reverse tends to get wonky with either the counts being wrong or just slightly misshapen. Word on the street is the fakes are getting to the point of being undetectable. Do bear in mind that Morgans differ from year to year as the dies are not identical. Before venturing into buying high premium numismatics you should educate yourself on these finer points so that you know what to look for in specific years and mint locations.

I personally like the Morgan. I love the 19th Cent. design.
