once they have this list, they can invent reasons why person x or y (political opponents) shouldn't be able to own a gun (they are racist, they are mentally unstable because they are a birther, they got in to a bar fight in 1972 so they might be violent, etc.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-il-gunowners-disclos,0,5686959.story

The Illinois attorney general says state police must release the name of everyone in the state who is authorized to own a gun.

Illinois state police determine who gets a Firearm Owners Identification card, which allows people to own guns. The police have always kept the list private.

But Attorney General Lisa Madigan's public access counselor released a letter Monday night saying the information should be public.

The Associated Press had requested the list of FOID cardholders but state police said that would violate the privacy of gun owners. The attorney general's office ruled that argument invalid.

State police officials have not said whether they will comply with the ruling.

There are Republican-sponsored bills in the Illinois House and Senate that would prohibit disclosure of the information.

So why does her dad want the information out? For those non-ILL folks, our State AG is also the daughter of the ILL House Speaker, Micheal Madigan.

A comment from the article.

Lisa Madigan is a talentless, know-nothing skank whose single qualification for public office is that she was adopted by Mike Madigan, gangster Democrat leader of the Illinois House. She never practiced law and doesn't know anything about it. She has all of the historical legal knowledge and skill of the average 25 year old law school grad.

She is a joke that Illinois keeps playing on its citizens.

Maybe this is a good enough reason for ILL to get rid of the FOID card.

They already know who has purchased a gun from a FFL dealer. A bigger question for me is why the AP wants to know who are the FOID card holders. Even if you are a FOID card holder, you may not even own a gun. Technically, all adults in a household with guns are supposed to have a FOID card. So really, it is a skewed answer the AP is looking for.

This reminds me when one state wanted to publish all CC holders. I don't remember which one.

I wonder when the AP is going to do a FOIA on the street gangs for their firearm data. :D

so really what this is, is that they only know the gun owners who filled out the yellow sheet. now they want a list of all the people who bought privately so that they have the entire list. so that they'll know everybody. am i getting this right?

Working way back when for the Ron Paul campaign we pulled all the ccw permits. The county sheriffs do the issuing with a copy to the Department of Public Safety. There were 25K permits. It took several of us about 3 week to type in the info into a spread sheet. The DPS people were real nice to us (we bought them lunch a few times) and said nobody had ever undertook a project like we did. Of course, the local commie front paper would pull a record here and there when necessary.

From what I got out of the original article the Associated Press wants this information.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. —
The Illinois attorney general says state police must release the name of everyone in the state who is authorized to own a gun.

So, the way I take a news outlet wants to know who all the people that hold a FOID card are and to make it public.
The state already knows who filled out the yellow sheet. Private sales, like many states, only require that you record the information of the sale for a period of 7 years or so. Nothing in a private sale is given to the state currently. This list would only consist of those people that "legally" have the right to purchase a firearm (possess a FOID card).

I would also note the word should in the article title. The word should is also noted in the press release. I really don't think the AG will succeed in this "outing". Especially since the stooge our Gov had in as the state police director was pushed out a few weeks ago.

This ruling has no affect on private gun sales and recording of those transactions.

I am trying to figure out the angle for the AP. It is a Rothschild company, ya know.

I would also like to know why our AG has a public access counselor. What the hell happened to a spokesman?

Why did you pull the permits? Were you selectively targeting possible donors?

If I was a Paul supporter and found out you pulled me from a ccw list, any support I had for Paul would end in a heartbeat.
Low way to go to find supporters. Especially since anyone could have access to the list.

Back to the OP, if this stands and granted their will be heal dragging, what stops gunshop owners from telling anyone the details of potential customers that filled out the yellow sheet?

Used to include addresses, too, but somehow enough furor got those removed.

It IS a matter of public record.

"The General Assembly has clearly determined that it is in the public interest to provide a system for identifying those who are qualified to acquire or possess firearms through the issuance of FOID cards"

Bureaucrats are the worst sycophants. Cowards.

It is publicly available info. No one had access to the list except for those who worked on it and working to create it gave insight to which sheriffs are gun-friendly and who's not. The list was eventually merged with the other data. I considered it a way to look for low-hanging fruit.
