(WHAS11)- Shots were fired by police and a man is dead in Henry County after a man allegedly took his own grandmother hostage at gunpoint.

It happened just after midnight in the 300 block of Saw Mill Road in Bethlehem about an hour away from Louisville.

One thing is clear, 24-year-old Lewis Jennings was shot to death by Kentucky State Police.

It happened inside a home in Henry County, and now WHAS11 News is hearing a different story as to how it happened, according to Jennings’ family.

"All I've seen they were holding the gun the other way when they shot. I heard 11 shots and that was it," said Carroll Jennings.

Carroll Jennings says his relative, Lewis Jennings, was shot to death in the kitchen.

Jennings would have turned 25-years-old this month.

Bullet holes are scattered in their home off Saw Mill Road.

Kentucky State Police says Jennings was drunk and firing a revolver in the air.

When they arrived before midnight, police say Jennings took his grandmother, Joyce, hostage at gunpoint in the home’s bathroom. After nearly an hour of negotiations, they say Jennings came out armed with a handgun.

Henry County Sheriff's Deputy Dean Murray shot off a taser but could not make contact.

That is when KSP says Jennings fired at Trooper Manny Soto and Deputy Murray, and they shot back and killed him.

"The suspect had a lethal force object in his hand, that being a revolver. All attempts were made to bring a peaceful outcome to the situation,” said Senior Trooper Michael Webb with Kentucky State Police.

This is where the story comes to a stark difference.

WHAS11 News talked to Jennings' grandmother who says she never felt threatened.

"No I didn't feel scared. I raised him since he was 2-years-old right here in this ridge. He wasn't going to kill his grandmother. He tried to say they fired at them. He did not fire at them,” said Jennings’ grandmother.

In fact, the family says the gun's firing pin was not in place.

Nonetheless, a thorough investigation is underway as the Jennings family grieves.

WHAS11 News asked KSP why the family’s story was so different from theirs.

"For 54 minutes they pleaded with him to have a safe conclusion to this ordeal. Unfortunately, his actions did not end in that," said Senior Trooper Michael Webb with KSP.

Pretty easy to test whether a gun was fired recently. Since it is probably a different caliber than what the police were using, should be easy enough to find a fragment of the bullet somewhere nearby, if he was shooting at the police.

Most likely: tests will be "inconclusive" and the officers who lied will get 30 days admin. leave with full pay (a/k/a "vacation") for "protecting a member of the public's life until he was dead".
