Here's something interesting: The monthly average of the price of silver has exceeded $20/ounce only 12 times in history, with half of them occurring these last 6 months. [Older dates are rounded to the nearest dollar]:
1. Jan 1980: $38
2. Feb 1980: $37
3. Feb 2011: $30.78
4. Dec 2010: $29.35
5. Jan 2011: $28.40
6. Mar 1980: $28
7. Nov 2010: $26.54
8. Dec 1979: $24
9. Oct 2010: $23.39
10.Sep 1980: $22
11.Oct 1980: $21
12.Sep 2010: $20.55
So far, first four days of March has averaged $34.52.

Yeah, I thought $100 silver was a longshot, like a 5% chance that it could get there. I still think it's a longshot, but now at 20%. I guess that's what $35 silver will do to you.
Now this might sound like blasphemy, but looking at the 8-year chart, silver might be best served with a healthy correction soon. We had a nice wave up to $14 in 2006, and a similar looking move up to $21 in 2008. But this near-doubling to $35 in the last 6 months looks a bit erratic, more symptomatic of an end-of-bull flame-out. I don't think that's what it is, but I wouldn't mind spending a few months back in the 20's to let this big move digest, and set the floor for a more stable assault on $50. The best way to high long term prices is to build stable floors.
$750 for a single roll of 1-oz rounds. $20,000 for a monster box of Eagles. "Junk" silver coins at 26x face. It's mind-blowing.

I predict brass and lead will be more valuable than silver once we are past a certain point.
Doubly so for food and water.
Not looking forward to it one bit either.

True dat.
However, if you need to get out of dodge on foot, you can only carry so much silver, food, water, and ammo. But gold, because it stores much value in such a small space, is invaluable for transporting wealth.
Best to have all of the above and see what unfolds.

Dang, I suppose I was wrong big time. Sunday night and silver is up another 60 cents! This is one of the strongest upward trends I've seen in a long time!

Other than 1979-80, this IS the strongest upward trend yet. Compare it to May 2006 and March 2008 (see chart in Reply #21), which were considered whoppers at the time. This is putting those to shame.

Are any of the Hunt brothers still around maybe they would like some of this action? ;D
The Aftermath
After hearings held by the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Consumer, and Monetary Affairs, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, Paul Volcker, suggested that the government should help the Hunts to restructure their debt so as to stabilize the nation's financial markets. In the plan that was drawn up, the Hunts were required to liquidate their silver holdings in exchange for a loan secured by a large percentage of their wealth.
