Here's some evidence of the gold craze: a businessman was just caught carrying 22 pounds of gold on a flight between two cities in India.
Yesterday morning, income tax officials caught an unnamed businessmen traveling with ~$667,000 in gold bars and "biscuits" on an overnight flight from New Delhi to Guwati.
The officials grabbed him as he de-planed.
From the Times of India:
[An official said,] "We conducted an operation after getting a prior information about the consignment and have successfully seized the gold which was brought from New Delhi. This was supposed to go to some other parts of the northeastern region via Guwahati.
"The gold was in shape of bricks and biscuits and is one of the biggest haul by the IT department. We have also nabbed a person who was carrying it. It's very mysterious how he managed to board the flight from New Delhi with such a huge quantity of gold."
The gold weighed 10KG and is said to be worth 3 crore rupees (worth about $667,000).
Officials haven't released his name yet, but apparently he works in construction.

Nobody has ever been able to own gold anywhere except the rich people.
His crime? Carrying gold while poor.

The biggest haul, interesting way of putting it. Intentions obvious? I think so. Notice how they say we "also" nabbed the guy too, the guy was second to the gold. The guy doesn't matter, they can discard the guy... they wanted the gold.
This makes gold look like some evil contraband. This is programming folks! Gold is just gold, it is what it is...yet the media portrays it to be something sinful.
I bet the guy's who "caught" him get a big pat on the back for bringing in so much revenue, even though they stole it.

I too was looking for some legitimate charge as to why they stole this man's property. It's outright theft and robbery, nothing else.

And the same will happen to you if you own more than five weapons and or 5,000 rounds of ammo... it is not what it is supposed to be but rather what they make it be.

Buying coins minted by our own damn government, makes us criminals...those could be gold eagles, instead of bars. Doesn't matter.
I'll be damned, never would have though of that. What a world we live in.

does beg a lot of Qs- IE this was a domestic flight, right? I could see international, where he did not declare the value he was importing and pay some duty tax, but this is like us flying Denver to Cleveland; what's the deal?

Here's the original source story:
10 kg gold seized from city-based trader at airport
GUWAHATI: Income-Tax department officials on Wednesday seized illegal gold bricks and biscuits from a Guwahati-based businessman at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport here. Sources said the gold, weighing around 10 kg, was worth `3 crore.
The officials, who had recieved an intelligence input about the consignment, waited for the passengers who came to Guwahati by the morning flight. The businessman was nabbed along with the gold at the airport itself.
"We conducted an operation after getting a prior information about the onsignment and have successfully seized the gold which was brought from New Delhi. This was supposed to go to some other parts of the northeastern region via Guwahati. The gold was in shape of bricks and biscuits and is one of the biggest haul by the IT department. We have also nabbed a person who was carrying it. It's very mysterious how he managed to board the flight from New Delhi with such a huge quantity of gold," said a source in the I-T department.
Though the name of the arrested person hasn't been revealed yet, officials said the man was a businessman and was involved with construction work in Guwahati.

22 lbs of gold at $1,450 per troy oz does not equal $667k. More like $383k.
10 kg = 22 pounds = 321 troy ounces @$1450 = $465,450
