:'(
I am moving a few raised beds and the soil in them today and while taking the last shovels full of dirt before dark, I heard a strange squeak .....Then I looked down saw a couple baby rabbits and a whole bunch of gray/white rabbit fur. Total of four baby rabbits about 2 to 3 inches long where hiding in a hole in the dirt. :( Man I feel bad We are hoping the mamma will come for them before something else gets them

We have tons of rabbits running around here this year....Even more than last year! An no coyotes this spotted this year...Come think of it, I don't think I have seen a yote in almost a couple years now

I like all the rabbits running around here and don't wanna let four of them die before they get to breed.

I will see about taking a flash picture of them .....in a few

Get a bottle and some guides on raising baby rabbits?
Start a new meaning for "pet food".
Otherwise, you have any dogs? They would make quick work of that task.

good to hear from you Ken.

i wonder if there's a way to make a surrogate mother rabbit. for example if you could teach them to lick milk off your fingers - or to take milk from one of those things they put in rat & hamster cages, the thing that drips water.

i wonder if another animal could be used to pick up the slack on baby-rabbit-feeding. i used to have a mother rat that seemed most happy when all 12 nipples were being used. she would help you - if you was alive and i lived near you.

maybe you can save some of the rabbits but not all of them ?

Furball; cough, cough...

http://www.rabbitweb.net/wild-babies.asp

If you are concerned that the mother has abandoned the babies, take two twigs and lay them in an "X" over the nest. When mother rabbit comes to feed them, she will disturb the twigs.

Wild female rabbits build shallow nests (called "forms") and only visit the nest once or twice a day to nurse. The rest of the time, they will be out of sight but probably nearby. A mother rabbit's infrequent visitations are meant to keep the nest hidden - more frequent visits would draw unwelcome attention from predators. Because the doe visits the nest typically just before dawn and just after dark, it can appear as if the babies were abandoned. If the babies have full bellies, they are being cared for, and the best thing you can do is to leave them alone.

We left them right where they where at and covered the nest so the rain wouldn't get em wet :)

They do look cute when they are tiny little bunnies but make no mistake. 1 rabbit became 5 rabbits. The next likely step will be 5 rabbits become 30 rabbits. At this point you make some stew or maybe pet food if you aren't sure with eating rabbit. If you get stuck the guys in this movie could help. http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi3824877849/

Glass is right, eat them now, or at least live trap and relocate them. Forget your garden if they are around.

Oh they're so precious!

I couldn't eat them after seeing those faces. :boohoo

But yeah it would be a good idea to get them out of there before they start snacking on everything!!

I like the idea where you give them to kids as pets. :)

In australia they have released 2 rabbit virus's in an effort to eradicate them. The myxomatosis virus and calicivirus. Unfortunately this means that each year many hundreds of pet flopsies and thumpers die from these diseases, introducing little girls and boys to the wonder of life and death with the potential that the first funeral they go to is their very own pet rabbits.

But of course they look so cute in the shops and Mum and Dad are so ignorant that a pet rabbit can be the ideal choice for an inner city pet until.......

I don't like rabbits. They are a pest. Sure they look cute but they are vermin in the wild.

Sometimes I crack up at the irony. We have a Govt department who's job it is to protect and conserve the environment. This includes the managing of vermin populations of say, rabbits, foxes, goats, pigs etc. Well I happened to be sitting out side their office one afternoon taking a break and what did I spy sitting in the gardens surrounding the place? Yes rabbits. This is virtually in the middle of the city. I guess its a good place to hide.....right under their nose.

I think it's better to learn about life and death first with a rabbit and than with a family member....

Is it really their job to protect and conserve the environment? And manage rabbit populations?

I don't have a problem with eating rabbit. I have before. It's different when you go hunting or kill the rabbit who's been a nuisance and has been eating all your veggies. I just couldn't eat helpless baby rabbits that I found in my back yard...all helpless with their little ears... haven't even grown into their big floppy ears yet... lol

To each their own but you seem to be confusing sporting with varminting. Yes, killing them when they are helpless is not sporting however killing them before they've started munching your veggies and become a nuisance is sound varminting.

I didn't mean it wasn't sound varminting. I should have been more clear, I mean I personally couldn't eat them because I'm sentimental.

"all helpless with their little ears... haven't even grown into their big floppy ears yet..." - This is just me being dramatic.

I wouldn't disapprove of someone else eating them. And I guess I could eat baby rabbits if I don't see their face or if I was going to starve and it was the only food around.
