Britain embarrassed by botched Libya raid
THE capture of a British expeditionary party in Libya is a major embarrassment to the British government and could undermine rebels' claims that the revolution rippling through Libya has solely domestic roots.
Libya's rebel commanders freed two MI6 officers and six Special Air Service soldiers captured by farm guards, after the British government vouched for their identities. The group was then flown to the frigate HMS Cumberland, which remains stationed off the coast of Libya.
Seven of the group had been flown by helicopter to farmland near the rebel capital, Benghazi, on a mission to establish contact with anti-regime forces. The eight Britons had been detained and questioned since Thursday by rebel leaders who had suspected they were mercenaries.
Challenged by guards at a wheat farm, they were forced to open bags containing weapons, reconnaissance equipment and multiple passports, and then herded into a dormitory before being handed over to the rebels.
The plans appear to have gone awry when their helicopter sparked an alert by landing near Benghazi without informing rebel commanders. A phone call from British ambassador to Libya Richard Northern to a rebel leader trying to clear up the ''misunderstanding'' was then seemingly intercepted and broadcast on state television.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague confirmed that the ''diplomatic team'' had left Libya after experiencing ''difficulties''. He said another team would be sent in after consultation with rebel leaders.

The Duchess of York apologised for accepting £15,000 from Jeffrey Epstein to help settle a debt with a former secretary.
She admitted it was a ‘gigantic error of judgment’ but said Andrew was ‘a first-rate father and first-rate man who does not know how to tell an untruth or behave dishonourably’.
The Duchess added: ‘I abhor paedophilia and any sexual abuse of children and know that this was a gigantic error of judgment on my behalf.
‘I am just so contrite I cannot say. Whenever I can, I will repay the money and will have nothing ever to do with Jeffrey Epstein ever again.’
Andrew has faced claims he received massages from teenage girls while staying several times with US entrepreneur Epstein, who has served an 18-month jail term for child sex offences.

Someone was telling me about it IRL yesterday. Then on another thread here on GSUS someone posted about a pedophile cult (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/mar/09/paedophile-satanic-cult-batley-kidwelly) in the UK. What's the world coming to?!

Antonio is probably better suited to answer that question.
IMO, it has something to do with distraction from the obvious.

I'm sure many of us will remember this one. Fond memories.
British special forces caught dressed as Arab 'terrorists'
British soldiers have been caught posing as Arabs and shooting Iraqis in the occupied city of Basra in southern Iraq. A group of them was caught yesterday by Iraqi police. They were driving an Iraqi car, wearing Arab clothing, and carrying weapons and explosives.
The Iraqi police were patrolling the area looking for suspected "terrorists" or "insurgents", and they noticed that the men were acting suspiciously. Suddenly, without warning, the suspicious men started shooting at people, but the new Iraqi security forces managed to capture some of them before they could escape. Obviously, if these men had not been caught, the mass media would now be reporting the incident as just another attempt by evil "terrorists" to create civil war in Iraq.
There have been a number of incidents in this area and throughout Iraq in which police and civilians have been targeted and killed by "terrorists" or "insurgents". But this is the first time that any of those responsible have been caught in the act, and it is now clear that at least some of them are working directly for the occupying forces, as many Iraqis have openly suspected all along.
A few days ago, in a statement unreported in the corporate mass media, Iran's most senior military official specifically linked the instability in Iraq with agents of the US and its allies: "we have information that the insecurity has its roots in the activities of American and Israeli spies."
