Alaska police surround Fairbanks home of leader of militia Sovereign Citizen Movement

BREAKING NEWS: Police surround Cox residence

Law enforcement officers have blocked an intersection near the home of a Fairbanks militia leader.

There are few details available, but Fairbanks police chief Loren Zager says the operation involves the Sovereign Citizen Movement and "multiple police actions."

An arrest warrant for a militia leader, Schaeffer Cox, was issued last month when he failed to show up for a court appearance on a weapons charge.

According to reports, an Alaska State Trooper carrying a rifle blocked off an intersection near Cox's listed address Thursday afternoon.

Alaska State Troopers are participating in a multi-jurisdictional operation in the Fairbanks area. An agency spokeswoman told the Associated Press there were no other immediate details.

The Newscenter is on the scene and we will have more information as it becomes available.

Schaeffer Cox is a young guy, good speaker, who many of us had high hopes for. Then he got busted for wife beating. :P

Fairbanks District Attorney Michael Gray said that Cox’s wife wanted the case dismissed or pleaded down to misdemeanor disorderly conduct to help the couple save their marriage. With the case primarily resting on her testimony, it was important to take that into account when deciding how to resolve the case, he said. “While the decision to go forward or not go forward with any case is in the discretion of my office and not the victim, we always try to take the victim’s desires into account when fashioning any resolution,” Gray said.

It turns out that Cox's wife was actually responsible for posting Cox's $3,500 bail as well.

Domestic Violence Advocates Exaggerate Statistics
On Monday, the Justice Department released the findings of a study, "Violence-Related Injuries Treated in Hospital Emergency Departments," showing that about 1.4 million violence-related injuries a year are treated in emergency rooms, far surpassing earlier government estimates. The study also shows that about 37% of violence-related injuries to women are inflicted by spouses, ex-spouses, or boyfriends.

Bonnie Campbell, director of the Justice Department's Violence Against Women Office, has said that the numbers provide "sobering proof" that domestic violence is underreported. In fact, according to projections from the study, 204,129 women and 38,790 men annually seek emergency-room treatment from injuries related to domestic violence. These are disturbing numbers. But they also show that domestic violence advocates, politicians, and the media have consistently exaggerated the scope of the problem.

The pamphlets, brochures, and other literature distributed by battered women's advocacy groups commonly assert that:

* 20% to 35% of women who visit medical emergency rooms are there for injuries related to domestic violence;
* battering is "the leading cause of injury to American women," or to women 15 to 44;
* domestic abuse causes more injuries to women than rape, auto accidents, and muggings combined.

These claims have been repeated by major news organizations including Newsweek, Time, The Washington Post, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They have been cited by the American Medical Association and by the Department of Health and Human Services, by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and by President Clinton.

The new Justice Department numbers show that ALL violence is responsible for about 3% of women's INJURY-RELATED visits to emergency rooms, and domestic violence for about 1%. Since fewer than a third of women's emergency-room visits are injury-related, this means that domestic violence accounts for fewer than 0.3% of these visits. While it is possible that some domestic violence cases were not identified in the study, it is noteworthy that its estimates include not only positively established but probable cases of violence from injuries.

Law enforcement agencies move against Fairbanks militia movement

UPDATED at 8 p.m.

According to Schaeffer Cox's Facebook page, he was taken into custody by the FBI.

FAIRBANKS - Fairbanks police and Alaska State Troopers today confirmed their involvement in multiple law enforcement actions involving the Sovereign Citizen movement associated with Fairbanks resident Schaeffer Cox.

A note was posted on Schaeffer Cox's Facebook page at 7:30 p.m. that said, "Schaeffer has been taken into custody by the FBI. Please pray for his safety and the safety of his family."

An arrest has not been confirmed.

Police chief Laren Zager said he was not authorized to give details because other law enforcement agencies are in charge of the operation. He did say the actions involved the Sovereign Citizen movement and involved multiple police actions.

“To properly enforce the law, multiple events had to happen at once,” Zager said.

Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said troopers are participating in a multi-jurisdictional operation, but she said she could not provide additional information.

An Alaska State Trooper carrying a rifle was blocking the intersection of Farmers Loop and Scenic Loop, near Schaeffer Cox’s listed Fairbanks address, at about 3:30 p.m. The trooper told a Daily News-Miner photographer and reporter to leave the area.

Federal agents from the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI were also seen in North Pole along with troopers near Lyle Avenue on Silver Street at about 5 p.m. A group of SUVs were seen beyond a trooper patrol vehicle that blocked traffic, and a U.S. Marshal K-9 unit was seen entering the area.

A Fairbanks court issued a warrant for the arrest of the 26-year old Cox, who has claimed to be the leader of a militia, after he failed to attend his own trial for a misdemeanor weapons misconduct charge last month.

Cox had been charged with failing to disclose his possession of a concealed handgun in the presence of a police officer. He will now face an additional charge for failing to appear. Both offenses are class B misdemeanors. Bail was set at $7,500.

Cox has used his case to challenge the authority of the Alaska Court System, calling himself a sovereign citizen and claiming the court is a for-profit corporation with no authority over him.

$3 million bail set for Schaeffer Cox; $2 million for 4 others charged in alleged murder plot

FAIRBANKS - A state magistrate set bail at $3 million for Schaeffer Cox, the Fairbanks man accused with four others in a plot to kill several people involved in Alaska law enforcement.

Cox, 26, and the others were arraigned in state court in Fairbanks today.

Bail was set at $2 million apiece for Coleman Barney of North Pole, Michael Anderson of 14 mile Elliott Highway and Karen and Lonnie Vernon of Salcha

Lonnie Vernon called the 17-page criminal complaint “hearsay on paper. ” None of the others spoke much beyond answering basic questions from Magistrate Alicemary Rasley about their ability to hire an attorney and how long they had lived in the Fairbanks area.

The five, who were arrested Thursday, face several state charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and other crimes.

Lonnie Vernon was also arraigned earlier in the day in federal court on charges of threatening to kill U.S. District Court Judge Ralph Beistline and a member of Beistline’s immediate family. Vernon was charged in federal court with threatening to kill Beistline, the chief judge for the U.S. District Court in Alaska, “in the fulfillment of his duties.”

A federal charging document says the threats against Beistline and a member of his family were made on or about Feb. 4 of this year “and continuing” through Feb. 16. The charging document says the threats were “in retaliation for and on account of” Beistline’s rulings against the Vernon and his wife in a federal income tax evasion case. The government says the couple owes about $166,000 back taxes and has attempted to seize their home to satisfy the debt.

The arraignments of the five began in state court just before 3 p.m. Each appeared in court individually by video, the usual practice for arraignments, but were seen on the monitor accompanied by a stronger-than-usual security presence.

The defendants will enter pleas to the charges at a later date.

The five accused in the state case reportedly made “Wanted Dead or Alive” posters with the faces of Capt. Burke Barrick, commander of the trooper detachment based in Fairbanks, trooper Lt. Ron Wall, Superior Court Judge Michael McConahy, Assistant District Attorney Arne Soldwedel and Fairbanks state court administrator Ron Woods, according to the criminal complaint.

The group reportedly stockpiled weapons around Fairbanks and conducted surveillance on the homes of the troopers.

Officers and agents from several local, state and federal agencies made coordinated raids Thursday afternoon to roundup the five alleged conspirators. All were reportedly arrested without incident.

At Cox’s arraignment, his attorney, Robert John, argued Cox should be allowed to have firearms in his home if he manages to post bail and be released. John said Cox needed to be armed “so he is not a sitting duck for people who may come after him.”

Rasley wasn’t convinced. “Another judge might choose to allow firearms. Not me,” she said.

Earlier Friday, Lonnie Vernon appeared in federal court wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. He is the only one of the five arrested Thursday to be charged with a federal crime.

Assistant U.S. attorney Steven Skrocki told Magistrate Scott Oravec that Lonnie Vernon is “not of the belief system” that typically follows court orders and should not be released. He said Vernon had harbored a fugitive — though he did not name the fugitive — and had weapons, including a machine gun. Skrocki noted that the possession of the weapons was, by itself, not a crime.

Federal public defender M.J. Haden entered the pleas of not guilty on behalf of Vernon, who spoke openly only regarding his name and address.

A detention hearing was set for 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Reached by phone after the hearing, Anchorage-based U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler declined to discuss details of the case that aren’t currently available in public court documents.

Rick Svobodny, a deputy state attorney general, said the Department of Law, including the Fairbanks District Attorney’s office, has worked with the various law enforcement agencies over the last several weeks in “obtaining search warrants for conversations and physical items relating to these people as they related to the charges — conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.”

Svobodny said the case “does involve weapons at different places around Fairbanks."

Svobodny said state and federal agencies shared much of the responsibility in the weeks leading to the arrests.

“It was a joint investigation,” he said.

I remember on the old GIM, reading a thread where Juristic Person and Gold Wampum were talking in glowing terms about the whole Sovereign Citizen scam. If I wasn't already convinced it was a blind alley to entrap and neutralize people, that would have clinched it for me.

Every now and then the 9th Circus gets something right. Schaeffer Cox was not guilty of solicitation to murder a federal official.

Schaeffer Cox Not Guilty of Solicitation! (https://itmattershowyoustand.com/2017/08/schaeffer-cox-not-guilty-of-solicitation/)

Posted on August 31, 2017 (https://itmattershowyoustand.com/2017/08/schaeffer-cox-not-guilty-of-solicitation/) by Doug Knowles (https://itmattershowyoustand.com/author/doug-knowles/)

Citing someone close to the case, the 9th Circuit found, “that it is clear that no rational trier of fact could find Defendant guilty of solicitation to murder a federal official.”

Furthermore, the 9th vacated Cox’s sentences on all counts of his conviction, and remanded it back to the District Court where new sentencing must be ordered.

If the District Court was interested in justice, it would sentence Schaeffer Cox to time served. Please let your voices be heard at the United States District Court of Alaska in Anchorage by calling 1-866-243-3814 (tel:1-866-243-3814) or by writing Chief Judge Burgess at BurgessProposedOrders@akd.uscourts.gov.

Currently, Schaeffer Cox is incarcerated in the Communications Management Unit at the Federal Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois. He has served over 5 years of a 26 year sentence, that obviously should have never been assigned.

Please read all of our coverage (http://www.usobserver.com/federal-framing-of-schaeffer-cox/) on Schaeffer Cox’s wrongful imprisonment (see below). Keep in mind that freedom of speech is no longer free. Just ask Schaeffer Cox.
