Japan earthquake a good Preparedness reminder:

On the teevee news they showed Tokyo grocery store shelves totally empty. The day after the earthquake. Totally bare shelves. Tokyo is over two hundred miles from the damaged city that took the full force of the tsunami. Many people were stranded overnight in their office buildings because they had no transportation home. I imagine they all wished they had a bugout bag (http://www.tacticalzen.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/bugout-bag-no-text.jpg) about now.

My Bugout Bag is full of merlot and cigars. I prefer Cabernet but you have to think of the ladies. My shelves are fully stocked.

My BOB has a gun, ammo, duct tape, and a ski mask. All I need.

Good reminder indeed. Our BOBs have needed to change as the kids' needs change & they get older. Haven't been as vigilant about their upgrades as we should.

You can't prepare for EVERY possibility, but many you can.

Time to take a set of fresh eyes to our BOBs.

So in light of this huge catastrophe, how should the Japanese people have prepared, I mean you can store food/water and supplies for a earthquake, and hopefully your house doesn't burn or fall down, but what the hell do you do to prepare for a tsunami /nuclear fallout ?

God bless the people of Japan my prayers go out to them.

Has Osaka updated anywhere yet?

They couldn't have done much besides NOT living on islands.

The first change I made in my life when beginning to prepare for the unknown was to move off islands and onto firm ground.

OP specifically qualified the post to be relevant to the fact that a city 200 miles away from the tsunami damage had bare shelves overnight and mass transit was shut down. A bag with some food, water, a jacket and some comfortable shoes and socks would be a huge plus in that situation. You could diversify from there but in all reality, in Japan where they aren't predisposed to riot during disasters, this would likely get you home in better shape than they guy with no bag. At home is where you want the mass quantities of food to hold you over.
