City Lowers Police Testing Because Not Enough Blacks Passed

DAYTON -- The Dayton Police Department is lowering its testing standards for recruits.
It's a move required by the U.S. Department of Justice after it says not enough African-Americans passed the exam.
Dayton is in desperate need of officers to replace dozens of retirees. The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test. Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two. The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That's the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’.
“It becomes a safety issue for the people of our community,” said Dayton Fraternal Order of Police President, Randy Beane. “It becomes a safety issue to have an incompetent officer next to you in a life and death situation." “The NAACP does not support individuals failing a test and then having the opportunity to be gainfully employed,” agreed Dayton NAACP President Derrick Foward. The D.O.J. and Civil Service Board declined Dayton’s News Source’s repeat requests for interviews. The lower standards mean 258 more people passed the test. The city won't say how many were minorities.
“If you lower the score for any group of people, you're not getting the best qualified people for the job,” Foward said. “We need to work with the youth and make them interested in becoming law enforcement officers and firefighters,” said Beane. “Break down the barriers whether they are real or perceived, so we can move forward in this community.” The D.O.J. has forced other police departments across the country to lower testing standards, citing once again that not enough black candidates were passing. The Dayton Firefighter recruit exam is coming up this summer. The chief said it’s likely the passing score for that test will be lowered as well.

I'm surprised they singled out African-Americans. I thought most .gov jobs required "minority" quotas, women included in that minority.

Damnit. Before I opened this thread I knew this was about my shitty town I work out of.
This is a screwed up yet funny situation. Dayton is really hurting on the streets for police, yet they still continue to not hire. I don't mind I conceal carry and less cops out and about the better IMO.
Does suck though for a couple friends of mine who are white and are trying to become police in Dayton. If only they were black or hispanic they would already be hired.

Lot's of that going around actually. It's nothing new, I know from fire dept testing they have what's called "rule of the list". Basically, no matter how well you rank, you could be #1 on the list and they can pick a minority over you, even if that person is #400 on the list. It's very hard to get hired in public service if you are white, sad to say.
I also know a police dept that changed it's physical agility testing to allow a female minority into the academy. Part of the test, you had to climb over a six foot wall. Not hard, most folks can do it. One gal couldn't do it, so they got rid of that part of the test so she could get hired.

We're all equal, so the lack of black physicists must mean that physics is racist. Why is the physical universe not making itself more understandable to aspiring black physicists? Racism. All of those confusing equations are like slavery against black people.

I can really see how it's interpreted this way. However, think about this, true equality has it's price. These depts don't get that. Yes, it's a fact that minorities less qualified get chosen over whites, that is a fact.
But also, these depts are basically saying that minorities are not good enough to compete with whites..so, they give them a helping hand. That whole mentality is wrong, it doesn't raise those minorities up to the strongest, best, get the job. The path of least resistance makes, collectively, a weaker group.
It's all how you look at it. We agree though, it's wrong. These testing process can completely be fair if they wanted them too, but they don't, and the public suffers by getting less qualified people.

They've been lowering standards for years. My father is a retired Police Officer from So. Cal.. He became one in 1964. It ticked him off to no end that they changed the physical standards to allow woman and "minorities" in. He used to go on and on about how right before he got out it became nothing but a joke and that "revenue generation" had become a game to most of the younger officers anyways. Not that "Mayberry" type cops ever really existed, but it sure as hell isn't anything close now.

I second the reduction in standards... old guy I know, nicest you could ever meet, worked 30 years at local electric company, told me about how when they started hiring blacks as linesman, they had to change the training he was giving them.
The old way of spot-checking the big relays (or whatever they were called) was to put one hand in your pocket, and with the other hand, brush the back of the hand against the relay to check it for temperature. If one was much warmer than the rest, it indicated a problem - apparently this is something that happens in 3 phase power a lot where the two legs can have issues; thus whatever relay is warmest is where you start troubleshooting.
Problem was the blacks were deathly afraid of electricity and wouldn't do it... so they went to HR or whatever and the order came down, can't train them on that. Only time I ever saw the guy show disgust on his face was when he was recounting this story.
I asked why if the guy was afraid of electricity he was working at the electric co ... the money was good and that was what the guys cared about (not doing a good job).
