This video is a couple years old but if you haven't already seen this it's worth the time to watch it. School systems are teaching kids "new math" and it's no wonder we are falling so behind in math and engineering fields. A lot of schools teach a curriculum called "Everyday Math". If your child's school uses it, you will need to find a way to supplement their math skills.

Anyone remeber the Ghoul? Banned by many many stations for a multitude of reasons but back in the 80's he did a math curriculum that caused me to pass all my math classes. Let me see what I can find...

I was taught basic math using the standard algorithm, but surprisingly I tend to use something more akin to the Turk method
when I solve a math problem in my head... although it was never taught to me.
Everyday math looks retarded.

When I do math in my head I reduce it into chunks that are easy to solve then assemble the chunks into the answer. I think that's new math. I would have a problem if that was my only method and I couldn't pencil something out.

Anyone who does a lot of math is going to develop their own way of doing it faster. I'd be really surprised if anyone did the oldskool method in their head. I don't see how you could as the problems get too cumbersome.
The problem is the ways you do it in your head are going to look silly when you try to explain them and put them on paper.

This is just more proof that the public school system is trying to make our kids into retards. Fire the bastards and don't look back!

If you don't learn proper mathematics, you will have problems figuring things out how they are connected to each other. And then you'll rely on authorities to provide you with the answer. And that is what they want...
