Towards the end of the most recent meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, Chairman Gary Marks stated that the 25-year anniversary of the American Silver Eagle had arrived, and as such its design was eligible to be changed. The committee held a voice vote, and unanimously agreed to entertain designs for a possible change.
The idea for the American Silver Eagle came from plans during the 1970’s and early 1980’s by the President to sell off silver from the National Defense Stockpile, as the domestic production of the metal outstripped the needs. These plans were thwarted by Congressmen from silver-mining states, who stated the sales would adversely and disproportionally impact their constituents. The logjam between the Executive and Legislative branches of government was broken in mid-1985, when the concept of producing a silver coin was offered by then Senator James A. McClure (R-Idaho) by his amendment to H.R. 47, the “Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Commemorative Coin Act”.
Any redesign would have to stay within the parameters of the authorizing statute, which specified depictions of Liberty and an eagle. The redesigns of other coins (50 States Quarters, Jefferson Nickels, and Lincoln Cents, to name a few) did increase interest in coin collecting by the general public. In this case, however, demand for silver is sufficient that non-governmental organizations are able to step into the market and provide for the demand. It is this reporter’s belief that much like the Austrian Maria Theresa Thaler, the American Silver Eagle should continue with its current design. The Weinman Walking Liberty on its obverse is one of the most beloved designs to appear on an American coin, and the Mercanti Eagle reverse contains all of the classic symbols of America.

Personally I like the notion that coin designs should be changed so they're not stagnant (like the Lincoln cent), but the SAE is probably the best design on any current US coin, bullion or otherwise, so I would vote to keep it the same.

"new design should be consistent with by-product filler additive"

I vote change it just so I can reap the reward of holding a discontinued design. It's not like they actually try to keep up with demand anyway so saying they are changing the design to increase demand is misdirection. How about making the face value on the thing in line with the correct definition of a dollar if you want to change something?

Rothschild Family Insignia - Eagle with Red Shield, holding 5 Arrows - according to some history books.
Hard to find an image of it though.

Can't help but wonder if that constitutes a "tip of the hat" to the Rothschilds.
Mayer Amschel Rothschild had 5 sons & 5 daughters. Son Nathan was the family member that had the most early success building the family fortune, by manipulating English financial markets at the time of the Battle of Waterloo.
of course, the American revolution was going on at the same time - rebelling against the King, or against the Power Behind the Throne ?

I usually caution against too many design changes (e.g. the penny, nickel, and quarter prostitution of the last decade), but I wouldn't mind a modification of the reverse to make the eagle look a little more sleek, like the one on the original Gold Eagles, or the Walking Liberty quarter.

Let's be honest - the present design is old hat and staid. Silver is hot, the white metal, the dog! We need to spruce up the obverse to reflect modern times:
1. The hairdoo should be changed to a buzz cut with spikes. The walking lady should become transgender.
2. Add some piercings: nose ring, ear studs etc
3. breasts should be enlarged into pendulous silicon-laden behemoths with pencil-eraser nimples.
4. Shoulders should be bare and tatoos added
5. Lose the long Victorian-era skirt and replace with tight leather pants and spike-heeled shoes.
6. Instead of carrying old stale flowers she should be holding an automatic weapon, one made in the USA.
On the reverse, the bird has got to go. The eagle is so machismo and chauvinistic. We need a more androgynous creature, reflective of the new age ideology and openess and coolness: perhaps the Wombat? :o

Actually, they could drop the whole Walking Liberty Half Dollar look and update the SAE to represent the Standing Liberty Quarter. The eagle on the back of the quarter is beautiful, and would be a fine replacement for the current eagle.

Yah, but $1.29 just doesn't look right on a coin. ;D

Okay, okay, point taken. I would say to remove references to the dollar from the coin and leave it as an ounce of .999 Ag but there is some intrigue to the thing being legal tender. I know I just hate the fact that it is not appropriately marked in face value for actual use as currency should we return to a constitutional standpoint in that regard.

This is a beautiful design and would look dynamite on a large 1 oz silver coin. The reverese eagle is arguably the best rendition of any coin eagle extant, including the wonderful St. Gaudens' eagle whihc does not have the flow and motion of this eagle. Mercante's heraldic eagle is regal but booring.

And she's showing some leg through the slit skirt. Looks like one of the proudest symbols of America has turned into a whore. There's got to be an analogy in there somewhere.

Apparently, the coin is more nippley 'in the flesh' as it were. To wit, this reviewer wrote:
I purchased the Standing Liberty coin and I could not be happier. It is a large impressive coin that has lots of character. I was surprised how fine the detail was (you can see the thigh muscles and a nipple on the breast). It has a very solid feel to it, and comes packaged in a protective sleeve. I would recommend this coin.
I would also recommend Provident Metals. I ordered this coin on Friday and received it on Thursday. They have the best shipping around, and ordering from them is hassle free. You get the product so quickly that you don't have to worry too much about changes in the market. With other metals dealers you have to sign a lengthy contract, open an account and wait 15-20 days to get your gold or silver. In that amount of time anything could happen in the market. With Provident Metals I had nothing to sign, I got my order quickly, and I feel relatively anonymous. Their quality is always great, and the description matches the product. I have not been disappointed yet.

I have the 2-oz Standing Liberty round with the wardrobe malfunction. One of my favorite fondles. I may have worn the nipple off.

It's a bummer I have to buy her like a common john just to see the nipple. >:(

I would suggest to the Mint that they replace "ONE" with "TWENTY". An ounce of silver stamped with "ONE DOLLAR" is, to put it lightly, absolutely ridiculous!

You know what's even more ridiculous? A five-ounce silver round with a legal tender status of 25 cents! A.k.a. America the Beautiful 5-oz silver rounds.
