SEABROOK, N.H. -- An "unusual event" was declared Monday at the Seabrook Station nuclear power plant because of smoke in an elevator.
Seabrook officials said a smoking transformer was discovered in an elevator in a plant support building. The plant's fire brigade was able to remove power from the transformer, stopping the smoke.
The smoke led the nuclear plant to declare an unusual event, the lowest of four emergency classifications. Seabrook officials said the declaration was made because the situation lasted longer than 15 minutes.
Power was turned off to the elevator, and no one was hurt or asked to leave the plant, Seabrook officials said.
