We been eyeballing the rocket stoves around here and went a different way...side by side ones so that more than one function can occur at the same time, and then taken down and stacked in the back of the truck for the next time.

16 ordinary bricks, with prior modification of the base one on each unit. There's even a video on how to construct, fire-up and use one. ;D For the price of clean, used bricks, it's a lower cost alternative to the nice one Chad sprung for (Good show, Chad!) Here's that vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSMR2ANIZ7E

==================

There's also a 6 brick rocket stove vid on YouTube. Interesting in this second video that DIY adobe type bricks have been utilized. (DIY Adobe withstands approx. 1100F temps in order to cure the bricks.

Chad, what is the diameter of the stove? Around 12"? I think I could easily build one in our shop and add an ash dump for it.

the diameter is 9.5 inches, the hole in the middle is 4 inches. height is just shy of 12 inches. make one for yourself!

How far down does the center tube go? About half the height?

What do you recommend for a lightweight backpacker's camping stove?

Chad,

What do you recommend for a lightweight backpacker's camping stove?

without a doubt, the fancy feast cat food stove. it's a variation of the super cat, but i like it better because:

1) it burns better
2) it takes about 2 minutes to make it
3) it costs about sixty-five cents to make it

it will burn denatured alcohol (hardware store), yellow heet (any gas station), everclear, etc. my kids and i cook on this stove a lot during the summer. follow the directions in this video and you will be rocking in under 5 minutes:

That's pretty cool.

I hope you don't get me hooked on stoves!

:-\

Now I may go buy some cat food... and I don't even have a cat.

chad
30th March 2011, 12:31 PM
one thing i should mention, if you're going to be making cat stoves, you need a heavy duty punch, a paper punch won't work. any farm type hardware store has them for about $10. sometimes they're called leather punches. you'll definitely want one.

gonzo, just save the cat food and give it out to the homeless ;D i don't have a cat either, i just dump it in the woods, and something eats it. :-X

i have a decent fireplace. it's a convection fireplace, designed for heating.

but it's not big enough.

it does get really hot though.

the part that's hot enough to put a pot on and boil water is only about 4 inches wide.

I must be cheap, I just grab some rocks, arrange them, hook up some good coals, and place the pan on top.

When I'm at that stage of existence, it's pretty much one of the more entertaining things to occupy the time.

If you want to build a cat stove, check out the Turbo Cat II stove which also provides an ability to control the amount of heat for a little bit more construction time. I have built two of them and they work very well.

Your post made me think of "fire clay", which can be purchased at a masonry supply store in 50 pound bags powder. This is what they use to fill the gaps between fire bricks in a fireplace. You can mix it with water and make clay, then form of mold it to whatever shape you want.

Here is a tip about cooking with a wood stove that my Grandpa told me, it dates back to a time before electric ovens.

He always kept a stack of cottonwood in the woodshed for warm weather season, it burns hot like paper and leaves very little coals behind, Grandma could get the stove hot fast to cook dinner and it would quickly cool down not having any coals built up all night
