How would you determine if the people around you are threats or assets as quickly as possible?
I was thinking what if the shit hit the fan and it was maybe you or you and your family and one or more other people maybe even the ups man or some college kid mowing your yard.
What questions could you quickly ask them to improve your chances of them not being a risk to you down the line but instead an asset in-case they decided they wanted to stay with you?
I know that almost no one is going to be home and only with their chosen family and friends in a time like this. just like in the Tsunami in japan. Maybe it's you and some co-workers or maybe you are in a taxi cab.
What 5 to 10 questions would you ask them?
I'm thinking you would start with:
1) Do you have any family near by?
2) Have you ever shot a firearm before?
3) Who did you vote for in the last couple Elections?
4) Who was your favorite Road Warriors character (This question will tell you whether he has a good heart depending on who he pics. If he pics some one like Wez or the Humungus that is not good)
5) Do you have any military or Police training?
What would your questions be?
I think this could really save some people who have to make a super quick assessment of character in a BOG or WRoL situation.
Edit:
Sorry I left out the part in my initial post of the fact that you may be out of town or on a vacation when the shit hits the fan. And this information will be of an even bigger help to you then.

This is assuming someone that you don't know wants to answer your questions. Me, I'm not going to be volunteering much in "bug out" situation. And if someone were asking me questions like this I'd assume they were sizing me up to take my stuff or looking to turn me in.

What if you were in a city on a business trip and you were in a taxi cab with one passenger and the driver? You probably would not survive well on your own in a foreign place like that how would you size up the other two before you decided to go it alone?

Guess I'd have to wing it.
I don't travel on business. In fact I don't travel much at all. If I do travel it's usually in my truck.

What does the answer to the first question tell you? Is "yes" or "no" an asset?

If they have family near by you would want to cut them loose so they can get to their family. Or I suppose you could ask them based on the other questions if they sounded like a good candidate if you could come with them if you were all by your self in a strange place.

You are missing the point. This is for a situation where you are on a trip, Vacation or away from your home and you have to make some very quick decisions about the people around you whether they could be assets or trouble.
I'm trying to start a dialog that will create some real good information for us forum users should we be caught AWAY FROM HOME in a bug out or SHTF situation.

Using humor might be the only way. Either that or properly using language to say things that people the person won't understand unless they are 'in the know':

Size up a "bug out buddy" in 30 Sec. or less? You've GOT to be kidding!
Here's how I feel about it:
The S is already hitting the F. If I don't already know you, I don't WANT to know you. I've spent a lifetime building a network of trustworthy friends... I'm not ABOUT to open the door to infiltrators, users, and assorted 11th hour scum.

Show me if you can hone/strop a dull straight razor and shave with it. If you can do this the chances are that you are a pretty well-rounded badass who`s been around the block a few times and a conservative.

I meant to start a straight razor shaving thread in the gents forum. I finally learned how to do this about a year ago. I`ve been collecting knives since I remember myself, made a few blades myself, sharpened 100s of them but could never quite get an old razor to shave. 100 years ago every man could do this every morning. Today having an interest in classic shaving shows rejection of modern comforts and overall conservative/survivalist tendencies.
If you run to the woods one day, you better have a couple of straights with you because your disposables will not last long but a real razor will outlast you if you take good care of it.

My answers:
1) Answer depends on where we are when you ask.
2) No, but I have plenty of experience shooting guns. Firearms are federally controlled objects.
3) Vote? Why would I legitimize a system of force by manipulating an illusion of choice?
4) What the fuck is Road Warriors, is that some shit on TV? I don't watch TV.
5) Absolutely. I'm trained to quietly observe from a safe distance and at last hope do my best to deal with military and police whenever I make the mistake of getting in their way.
So, am I worthy?

If the shit is hitting the fan and some stranger asks me who did I vote for in the last (5! lol) election(s) I'm going to stay very far away from that person.
To me that is a clear sign he is not right in the head.

you might have something there, but I think humor has to be cultivated.....
perhaps a few lucky souls are born with it, but I suspect most have to cultivate....
and the old addage "laugh or cry" plays into it.....

What would your questions be?
in order to deal with the situation, you have to be able to discuss the use of water for sanitation reasons vs. for composting.
because, even if you live in a place with ample rainfall, you normally have to use electricity to get water.
in other words, you have to be able to talk about poop and urine. humanure, and deploying urine & the urea in it to add nitrogen to the compost piles, to help them heat up.
but i normally don't talk about these subjects when i first meet someone. maybe questions 21 through 30.

Yes this may be true if you were on your own home terf. But if you were far from home and by your self you would have to make friends fast to survive. How would you do it?

Yes, If I had not known you by those answers I could tell you were a good candidate for sure.
I also think that what Antonio said is very true also that a good sense of humor can make things go much better.

Question #1 should be:
"When was the last time you took a shit in the woods?"
Great conversation starter, and maybe throw in something like: "Have you ever wiped your ass with poison ivy?" ;)
Depending on how those questions get answered would probably give me a good iea how long until I bug out from bug out buddy.

got tits?
sorry :(
seriously - If I haven't already developed a relationship with someone - know them well - I don't want to bug out with them. I'd rather be solo than have someone I don't know watching my back.
I would take any of my "not so bright" "not aware" "defenseless" friends over some "well prepped" person I don't know that I can trust.
I have quite a variety of friends - some are way way preped mentally - but don't have the ability to be as geared. I have a few that would be the best to be with in the middle of a warzone - they are looking forward to it.....and have the training....me not so much wanting to be in that spot.
So, I have enough preps for anyone with the right state of mind. In TSHTF companionship would be a greater asset than anything else IMO. You had better have that in place long before tshtf imo.

I think you're leaving yourself open on that one. I think the better question would be "Are those tits real?"
Something like this would be choice criteria imo:

No strangers will be welcome WTSHTF for the first while.
I might consider bringing in strangers later on after things cooled down, but for the first while it's just my, my family and my network of friends that are already trusted by me.

No one gets to ride sidekick in that situation unless they can prove the following:
* Must be able to STFU during critical moments of tension.
* Must know that the law is in their own hands and cannot depend on LEO's
* Must have own food source, or enough layers of fat for an energy source.
* Must not be a smoker or alcoholic (I don't care about how your day went)
* Must be able to run, climb, lift, carry, pull, think intelligently and beat guitar hero on expert level.
