there's a chain of coffee stores in my town (local thing, no national name). 3 of them. i went to the one closest to me yesterday to sponge internet. my wife just called me and said it's closed, and there's a big sign on the door that says all of them are closed. she also said everything in the store is **poof** gone. they must have worked all night long to gut it. that's pretty radical to clear the whole thing out in 1 night.

i've always thought of coffee shop traffic as some kind of economical indicator
not quite sure what i mean by that
doesn't sound good though

Agreed, I look upon beauty and nail salons in the same manner. These are extravagant expenses that can only be afforded with disposable income. They are very clear indicators.

Apparently their internet service provider-related expenses were the coup de gras budget wise. Then they got the fine from DHS who discovered that their ISP account was being used by right-wing gold bugs who networked at some nefarious fringe website called GSUS. Another victim of the notorious 'hanging chad' as it were. :oo-->

If they moved out during the night they had to be Months behind on their Rent
In commercial properties once the Land Lord puts a padlock on the door everything in there is his property and will be sold to recoup back rent.
Shop equiment ( freezers, display cases, commercial stoves etc) are very expensive and small shops are loathe to loose it.
The fear of loss is powerful motivator to keep your property ( that is why they can get it done so effectively)

for better wireless poaching, you need a high-gain wireless router.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833162134
"BUFFALO WHR-HP-G54 802.11b/g Wireless-G High Power Router up to 54Mbps/ Open Source DD-WRT Support"
$60
also, check out the Networking forum at Anandtech. JackMDS is the moderator & he's a genius, also a Microsoft MVP, whatever that is.

you can also buy cheap USB antennas for about $20 that have better range than the built in wireless module on a typical laptop.

Spot on. Tomorrow is April 1st. Either the rent was due or the landlord gave that as the drop dead date. The HAD to get out.

ohh, you just reminded me that I have to plan some april fools jokes for the kids.
Also, JQP, please don';t pretend to shut the forum down. That wasn't funny the last time.

If you use public hotspots do yourself a favor and learn a few things about SSH tunnels and MAC address spoofing. Even if the host router isn't watching you someone nearby with just the smallest amount of knowledge on ARP poisoning and a wifi adapter capable of promiscuous mode very well may be.

...speaking of coffee shops...
last week, i went into a local coffee bar (supposedly "higher-end") and ordered 2 large double/doubles...
the girl at the counter said "that will be $4.80 (cdn) please"
i was like " FOR TWO COFFEES?!? Are you serious??" she nods yes, i shake my head in disgust and give her the money, she points to a counter near the door and says "everything is over there, help yourself."
i said " so let me get this straight, you charge almost as much as starbucks and you expect me to make it myself??"
then when i look at the coffee selections, they have everything BUT regular coffee, each in its own urn, and with a description card that reads more like a wine review. i asked her if she had anything that just tastes like coffee, and she made a recommendation (not a very good one, i might add), and i was only able to stomach about half the cup.
needless to say, i will NEVER darken THAT door again!
denis leary sums it all up right here...

I rarely go into a coffee shop - usually grab a cup at work or make my own at home.... but the other day I stopped into a starbucks...they are a customer of ours...and they didn't step on open carry...so I don't feel too dirty.....BUT...
walked out paying $7 for a small muffin and a triple latte plus a $1 tip. ($8 bucks total)

i guess they probably were back logged on the rent and had to get out quick. but man, that's 3 locations. coffee business must be really bad.
and they are seriously overpriced.

It was the GIM coffee shop. Just standard April 1 operating procedure.
