Japan Coast GuA dog has been rescued off the coast of Japan after surviving the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, and then a further three weeks alone at sea.

Three weeks after being swept out to sea by Japan's devastating tsunami, a dog was found alive on a floating island of debris.

Crew on a Japan Coastguard helicopter circling the wreckage of a house floating on the ocean got a surprise when they saw the dog scramble out from beneath the rubble.

The house had been washed away not far from the Kesennuma coast in northern Japan, following the magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that left more than 28,000 people dead or missing and damaged six nuclear reactors.

As the helicopter moved in closer, the frightened dog retreated below the rubble, forcing rescuers to winch down.

The dog was eventually rescued by a coast guard boat when the helicopter reportedly ran out of fuel.

Japanese broadcaster NTV said there were hopes that the dog would be able to lead the coastguard to its owner.

A massive search and recovery operation is underway to find 18,000 people still missing and now presumed dead.

That dog looks to be in pretty good shape for being on floating wreckage for 3 weeks. Maybe he had a bugout bag full of Begg'n strips?

This is an incredible story that approaches the transcendant.

Somehow, this pet managed to stay alive for weeks by floating on debris. The Japanese Coast Guard made the effort to save the dog even after it resisted them initially.

But also consider the unanswered parts of the story. What is the fate of the family? And just imagine what this little creature witnessed at the time of the tsunami - and has endured for the past two weeks.

Also, I think it speaks to the cultural state of the Japanese that they would make a real effort to save an animal floating (I'm not so confident in our society.)

It could have been put there just recently too. Create a distraction. People are suckers for these types of stories.

That's kinda what struck me. I'm pretty moderate on the conspiracy front (relatively speaking), but that dog looks too healthy for having gone without food and water for nearly 3 weeks. Morale booster?

Thanks Awoke. With all that is happening (a new war, massive oil slick in the Gulf yet to be reported on, Japanese Tsunami/meltdown, Yen carry trade demolition, the Congressional commedy [$61 billion in cuts and all is well? LOL], etc. etc.) it is time for some GSUS.

foot note..............

A dog rescued from a roof drifting off Japan's north-east coast more than three weeks after a quake and tsunami has been reunited with her owner. The owner recognised the dog from a TV news report on the rescue on Friday. The female owner and the two-year-old dog called Ban had an emotional reunion at an animal care centre where she was being looked after. The dog was found by a Japan Coast Guard crew on a drifting roof some 1.8km off Kesennuma, Miyagi prefecture, one of the worst-hit areas along Japan's north-east coast. Ban immediately jumped up and wagged her tail when her owner appeared, local media reported. (BBC)
