View Full Version : Coin Store visit 4/7/11

So, I poped into a local Coin store yesterday. Was there a few times, very good neighborhood but you need to be buzzed in (?). Very little silver on hand, not even ASE, a few 10 oz stackables and some special silver in albums with presidents on them. I asked and he said people were buyers mostly, very few sellers. As I was leaving I joked and said, don't forget to keep a little for yourself and he smirked and nodded with that (I know) look. A Golden (silver) moment.

I went to a couple a local coin shops in my area. Both of them had silver but not much. There not many silver bars there. I came away empy handed from the first coin shop and went to the next one. The second coin shop was the same as the first one in that there was not much silver there. I ended up leaving the second coin shop empty handed. Both of the coin shop owners said that they are having a hard time of keeping it. Once they get silver, someone always buys it up the next day. It has been like that in the last 2 weeks and I do not think that this will improve since more people are buying silver.

A friend bought a tin boiler at auction filled with household goods. He paid $47. On checking everything out he found 6 sterling silver hallmarked spoons .... he figures 9 oz total.
That is a nice find! I love when I score on little things like that. It doesn't happen often.

There's a little coin shop that's out of the way from where I live, but whenever I'm passing through I stop by. The last three times I've been there, there has been no gold whatsoever, and the only silver has been sterling silverware and plates. No silver coins. Then there's a bunch of modern "numismatic" coins in slabs and modern mint sets and commemoratives that nobody cares about.

One of my local guys NEVER seems to run out. You got the FRNs, he'll pull out the metal. When silver dropped below $10 in 2008, he took it off the shelf and said he wasn't going to sell at that price. He didn't pretend he didn't have it. He's been doing this for over 30 years, so he was a noobie dealer during the 1980 blow-off top.
I don't understand these guys with no supply; I guess they must be small-timers. If at $40 you say you'll pay $43 per ounce up front, he should be able to make a phone call and secure your silver from his regional guy.

Looks like Tulving finally has some SAE's to order. They don't ship til the 18th though. I think it maybe hit or miss if the dealers can keep it in stock.

Went to the local shop today. Only about 25 SAEs on hand. No 2011s.
Picked up 7 of them 2 which were 1986's for $42 each. Couldn't beat that price.
I also picked up 1 oz of generic silver bullion for get this... $41.
Too bad I don't have the cash to buy all of the generic he has. There wasn't much either. Maybe about 15 oz total.
I didn't ask about any bars.

My place had plenty on hand yesterday. Half the people were buying; half were selling. I picked up two tubes of buffalos at $43. per oz. One tube of 2011 SAEs at $45 per oz. He mentioned it had taken him five weeks to get that tube. I also grabbed three Lunar Rabbits at $48 each, along with a couple ozs of Krugs in whole and fracs. Just like any other day, except for the higher prices. No tax either since I covered CA's $1500. threshold. Oh yeah, picked up a 1/4 oz platinum Maple too. There went my vacation fund.

You won't believe it but here goes...
I hit the pawn shops, especially after big run ups because so many of them do not watch spot closely. Yesterday I went to one about 70 miles from my home. They had 5 ASE's and three silver dollars. I asked to see them and he pulls them out. Each of the eight coins were marked $40. He mentioned that spot was about $39 when he looked last and I told him it was over $40. Then I asked if he had seen the 200 day moving average, and said it is due for a big correction. He mentioned something about world unrest, then I told him I just couldn't pay $40. He asked what I would pay and I said "what will you let them go for?" To that he replied $30 a piece. Needles to say I have $240 less today than I had yesterday.

He probably only paid $5 each for them, so he made $25 each, pretty good profit.

I think Olmstien nailed it. I've read that Pawn shops only loan 15% of true value, which would be $4.80 at $32 an oz.

As of the same day, a good supply locally. Lots of silver in the guy's shop. I purchased a set of 6 sterling shot glasses, a Thaler on a silver chain, and 6 junk Morgans. Set me back $500.00. He had lots of junk silver, in all variants, and a few 1/2 pound and kilo silver pieces. Couple of sets of flatware. (Which will be my next purchase if I can find a nice looking complete set.) Had some SAE and generic rounds and bars. I was happy to buy the Morgans, I'm all about the junk.
Didn't look at gold as that was not what I was after.
Looked like there were an equal number of buyers and sellers in the store. So that is a good sign. :)

My visit was on the 8th. Selling my first Bar with the price over $40. A milestone since $40 was my original price target when I did most of my buying and I happened to be passing through the city.
Was at the main PM exchange in Vancouver. vbce.ca (http://vbce.ca/index.cfm?fuseaction=fx_services.Gold&Silver) First time I have had to wait in line a significant time (at least 20 minutes). However most business seemed to be trading Asian cash for dollars. No problem selling at spot price as always.
I asked about the silver business at the store (more sellers with the price just up $10?) and there is no noticeable increase in selling. Business is the same as usual (and what I also was told over 6 months back): They are fully stocked with silver products to sell and consider this an achievement of service they are proud of.
They do this by limiting the volume sold to any client. "The market is so small one person could clean our stock out." The impression I had was that people often want to.
I recall 5 years back when I was buying they would limit 100oz bar sales to 2 per day.
He singled out 1000oz bars as being the silver product in most short supply. Not sure if he was talking about their market for the bars or the general CRIMEX market.
Because the value of the bar was over $3000 I had to show my driver's llicense and they entered the name onto a line of an excel like spreadsheet.
While I'm in the store I saw an older bearded long haired granola type that sat a few rows ahead of me on the ferry to Vancouver that had a few cardboard boxes in a granny shopping stroller. He was wearing what looked like a well sewn home made cloth version of the cheap paper nose and mouth face masks and unfolded wrapping paper and laid it out before sitting on the chair. He was called around to the back door to go behind to do his business. Each box in the stroller had Ron Paul Bumper Sticker prominently displayed on the front (a rare sighting in Canada). He certainly made an impression on everyone in the line even if they had no idea who Ron Paul was.
I thought at the time this is what 'a Ponce's son' could look like. If I spotted a GSUS member give me a PM. 8)
What sucked at the end of the trip was my first time to sell silver at my original target price was a failure. Even though I initially paid $1 (CAN) for just 85 cents (US) of silver, while silver was over $40 US and I sold at spot, I recieved less than $40 CAN. Got 96 cents (CAN) for $1 (US) of silver.
I think there is a problem with the American Dollar. ::)
Just read this from the website:
VBCE does not ship any bullion products, but a sister company of VBCE, Border Gold Corp does. Please contact them for further details.
I hope this town still has two big spot price retail dealers. What does 'sister company' mean? :-\
I'll try to find out when I have some more time.

Pickin's were slim and shop guy said he sold 750oz in less than two hours from the time he opened, but knows I like Mex stuff and set some aside. Plenty of 100oz bars though. It was packed and only a few people were selling. all elderly. If this post souds choppy, it's 'cause I'm on drugs :P

Half the board is probably on something. No sweat. :D
Intresting that you say it is all old people. Bob Chapman remarked in a couple of interviews this week that the only ones left holding the bag that are now just breaking even would be in their 80's-90's going by the demographic of buyers in the 1980 run up.

For the last 3 weeks most of the local dealers in my area did not have much silver in stock. Nothing much has changed at this point. The main dealer that I usually go to to buy silver art bars from told me that he can barely keep up with demand when it comes to silver. Everytime they get silver in their store, it is gone a day or so later according to what he told me. The last time that I went to my main local dealer, he did not have much .999 generic silver left. They only silver he had in the store was some common date SAE's that were selling for $5 over spot.

Where are you getting your scrap copper? I am a roofer and pick up trimmings left behind by electricians or plumbers when I am on break or after a job is finished but still only have about 50 lbs after 6 months. Wish I could figure out a way to get more I still have a little free time once and awhile.

The first local dealer that I went to today (in GA) had more silver than I was used to seeing, however, I did not find any silver art bars that I was looking for. I went to the 2nd local coin dealer (in TN) but they had very little silver in stock and I did not find anything that I wanted. I came away empty handed from both of those local dealers. The only two ways that I know to post pictures on this forum is through 1.) Upload directly from your hard drive and 2.) Upload to Photoshop and post the photoshop link to the post.
If you decide to upload the photos directly from your hard drive to the forum, then you have to make sure that the picture that you are upload to the forum is not bigger than 300KB.
If you decide not to post the silver art bar pics on the forum, then I can still possibly help you identify them if you can describe the silver art bars to me.
EDIT: What SLV^GLD said. Thanks SLV^GLD. :)

The Silver Creations silver art bars might be a note-worthy one. Do you have a pic of the front of this Silver Creations silver art bar?
In my experience, the Silver Creations art bars have been hard to find and I have yet to see one locally from any local dealers or from any local coin shows despite the fact that a lot of them have mintage numbers ranging between 4000 to 5000.
The other two on that post are common-minted '70's silver art bars. The "Nassau Balloon" silver art bar was minted by Madison Mint. These are fairly common because I have seen these locally at the local dealers. The "Horse and Buggy" silver art bar was minted in 1973 by the Patrick Mint. This too is a common-minted silver art bar. Most Patrick Mint bars were minted in 1973 and are fairly common.
Overall, these are just common-minted '70's art bars on this post. Nothing rare on this post.

The Gary Wheaton silver bar appears to be a Johnson Mathey bar. Looks like I see JM on the front bottom of the bar. I think that is also a common art bar.
The Coca-Cola-Atlanta silver art bar is a note-worthy bar to me. This particular silver art bar was minted in 1975 by the World Wide Mint. Coca-Cola silver art bars usually command a high premium on ebay. With spot at $48+, this particular Coca-Cola bar will fetch a winning bid of between $55 to $60. This is the most common Coca-Cola bar that was minted. 50,000 of these Atlanta Coca-Cola silver bars were minted according to the second edition of Thomas Mock's guidebook titled "Coca-Cola Bottler's 75th Anniversary Ingot and Round Guide Book 1975 to 1988".
Anytime that you can find any Coca-Cola silver art bar at a local coin dealer (or coin show) and pay only .999 generic silver premium for it is IMO considered a home run because these bars cost a much higher premium on ebay. Good find on that Coca-Cola bar. :)

These two bars in this post are also fairly common silver art bars. The "Abraham Lincoln" silver art bar was minted in 1972 by Madison Mint. Most Madison Mint silver art bars are fairly common but there are some exceptions to this rule.
The "Fathers Day" bar in this post is a Hamilton Mint art bar. Most of the Hamilton Mint silver art bars are very common and you can easily be found at a local dealer or a coin show for .999 generic silver premium. Most Hamilton Mint silver art bars have mintages that range between 5000 to 15,000.

Thanks a bunch, all these are from generic bins from local dealers, I see these, er.. correction I USED to see these all the time. Hard to find anything now-a-days.

The "Colossus of Rhodes" silver art bar was minted by Mount Everest Mint in 1973. I have not seen one yet locally but based on the mintage of 4000, would not surprise me to see one in the .999 generic silver bin of a local dealer.
The Satelite art bar is a noteworthy one. It is a 1-oz "Conrad-Kerwin-Weitz" silver art bar. This one was minted by Silver Creations in 1973 but the mintage on this one is lower than most of the Silver Creations bars that are listed in the silver art bar guide book. This silver art bar is part of the 3-bar "SkyLab" series. 1250 of these were minted according to the 4th edition of Archie Kidd's guidebook called "An Indexed Guide Book of Silver Art Bars". A semi-rare art bar IMO. I have never seen one locally or at a local coin show but based on the fairly low mintage of 1250, these are hard to find. I have seen these on ebay for very high premiums but I have only seen these as ebay Buy-It-Now(BIN) auctions and BIN auctions are usually priced higher than the final winning bid of a regular ebay auction. That is a good find and congrats on that. :)

These two silver art bars in this post are common-minted art bars. The "Secretariat" bar was minted in 1973 by United States Silver Corporation. The "General" silver art bar was minted in 1972 by Madison Mint.

This is front and back gold plated from the watergate series hear, see and say no evil 1973
According to the Archie Kidd 4th edition price guide, This E.J. Aleo & Associates silver art bar is part of a 3-bar set called "Constitutional Conflict". The guidebook also mentions that there were 974 of these gold-plated versions minted. I consider that a rare art bar and that is a great find. I have never seen a GP version of this bar. I have seen the regular version locally in the past but the regular version has a much higher mintage number (3900) than the GP version.

Streets of Gold,
Overall, the silver art bar finds that you posted are common-minted silver art bars. The 1975 World Wide Mint Coca-Cola-Atlanta silver art bar and the 1973 Silver Creations SkyLab silver art bar are the noteworthy ones in my opinon because they generally sell for a much higher premium on ebay. Congrats on those two art bars finds. :)
The Madison Mint and Hamilton Mint bars are fairly common and can usually be found at local dealers in their .999 generic bin. Holiday-themed bars such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are common art bars. Father's Day and Mother's day themed bars are also common and are not rare bars.

Oooh neat since I have (4) total of these bars :) I will work on my photo skills next time. Now I'm getting interested in the art bars and am going to try and seek them out a little more than I usually do. Thank you for your help in this.

I went to the coin shop on Sat. first time I have seen 1 oz silver art bars, other then here, they had about 60 ounces generic silver rounds, the guy wanted $ 1.31 over spot, so I didn't buy anything. ::)

Actually that is not a bad premum IMO. If you are used to paying less than $1.31 over spot, then I can understand why you did not buy anything. The main local dealer that I go to in GA charges between $1.50 to $2 over spot for silver art bars and other .999 generic silver. There is another local dealer in GA that I can buy 1-oz silver art bars for as low as spot but the downside is that he does not have much silver in stock. The local dealers that I go to in TN also charge about the same premium as the local dealers in GA but the TN sales tax makes it more expensive to buy silver in TN.
Lately, there was not been much silver in stock in my local area and I do not think that will change anytime soon because a lot more people are buying silver now. Dealers seem to have a little more gold available than silver. I have seen SAE's at one local shop sell for $5 over spot silver.

I agree with Josey; that seems like a reasonable price for an art bar that you find attractive. But I'd take a generic round over an ugly art bar.
