View Full Version : I'm gonna sell some silver.

Don't worry, it ain't nothing that can move the market but the timing is right for me. I'm gonna dump 20 junk halves for about $300, this will buy needed truck parts and a Berky with a few added FRN's, all for free really. It just seems the right time to utilize the houses money while I can, otherwise I'll still buy a dime at a time, sota speak, like I always have for the most part. I realize that this is chickenshit chump change to a lot of folks but it is what it is and I do love fucking the house, even micro minimally.

Sounds to me like you have a good reason to sell. The only time I'd sell, is to immediately turn it into something tangible, like what you've got planned.
Personally, I think we are due for a correction. It's gone up too high to fast. Do what you've got to do Liberty, it's all good and don't feel bad about anything. Now's a good of a time as any..

I wasn't going to mention this, but I sold 30 Ozt in bullion rounds 2 days ago (on Wed.). Turned the FRN's IMMEDIATELY around for a once-in-a-lifetime deal on some prep goods, after buying 8 merc dimes with the "change". I also think there is a correction due in a week or two (at which point I'll hopefully buy back in for about half the qty. I sold). Even though it's gone up about $2.00 since my sale, I don't feel the LEAST bit regretful about my decision. Silver would have to break $110 per ounce before I'd actually be "out" any money... the preps deal was THAT good! ;)
BTW, I agonized over the decision before selling, but walking out the door after selling was like a cool breeze of relief... there's NOTHING that feels as good as making up your mind and finally just DOING something instead of agonizing about it.

Libertytree, if you pick up a Berkey, buy it off of E-bay, you get the best deals.
Here's some examples:
Has Shower Filter Added:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BERKEY-LIGHT-Water-Filter-System-w-KDF-PF-2-Fltr-/320208623491?pt=Small_Kitchen_Appliances_US&hash=item4a8debd783#ht_5036wt_1139
Has Sports Bottle Added:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BERKEY-LIGHT-Water-Filter-System-w-Bottle-PF-2-/320678737012?pt=Small_Kitchen_Appliances_US&hash=item4aa9f13474#ht_3599wt_1139
Normally they have these deals around $209, but the above are still cheaper than you'll get normally anywhere else (keep checking back on E-bay.) Make sure you get a deal with PF-2 filters, since that's what removes the fluoride, but remember they last 1/2 times as long as the normal filters. In other words if you have long term preps, make sure you have 2x more PF-2 filters than the black regular filters.

I think it's a smart move, ...
I don't agree. It is a small enough amount that you should be able to get a loan or put in on your credit card for just a few weeks/months and then pay it back. Even if you have to pay 12% interest (which would be less than $20 for a six month loan), that is less than the rate at which silver is climbing. I know that taking on debts that are too much to handle is a no-no, but you certainly should be able to get some cash flow coming in to pay that back in no time. But whatever you do, I hope you can get some more silver eventually, prior to the move over 3 digits (still a ways out).

Well, to be more precise, that is less that the rate at which silver has climbed.
Selling silver at this point probably also has to take into account the portion of your assets that you hold in silver. If you can sell it at this point but still have a good enough accumulation in the event that the price never lets you back in, then it's not such a bad thing. If your entire silver holdings is 100 junk halves, then I wouldn't be selling any of them.
One other factor; I've always thought it's not so bad to do a modest sell here and there to get used to the other side of the transaction. Did you get the offer you always assumed you'd get? Did you have to "haggle" to get a fair price? Let us know how your transaction goes, LT!

I personally like www.directive21.com for my berkey needs. He used to be a member at GIM1 too but got banned by scorpio (iirc) for "advertising". He's a good guy. He'll give you his personal cell phone if you need to call him incase you have any issues. I bought a Royal Berkey from him a year ago, and recently just bought 6x replacement filters for long term preps. I would HIGHLY recommend him.
Prices for a berkey light are $220 with 3x sport bottles (which are AWESOME btw) or 1x sport bottle and the flouride filters. Free shipping to lower 48.
Looking at his site it looks like all the steel berkeys (except the travel) are out of stock...that is interesting. I'm not getting a kickback or anything from this recommendation, he's just a great guy, ex-GIM member, and all around VERY helpful if you have questions.
I've been talking with my wife about selling some silver. We've been seriously considering selling most of our silver to pay off her car payment -- Last debt as we rent and don't have a mortgage yet.

He hangs out at www.survivalistboards.com now. I linked him to here awhile ago but I don't think he ever joined.
Also, unless the cheaper prices come with those water bottles, I would pay the extra $11 for the bottles. Those things are SWEET, and necessary if you dont have water pressure and have NEW filters as they have to be "primed" before they can be used. You can prime with the water bottles if needed. We carry one of those bottles in each of our Get home bags in the cars. And I've used one at work for 6 months or so. I love them.

I have been selling 1 oz of 90% junk silver in auctions on eBay over the past couple months and I have been banking. $1.20 in junk coins and I have people paying $42 or more an auction now. Making enough profits that I can continue to buy more junk silver w/ rebates like Mr. Rebates/eBucks/CC Cashback and continue to get folks way overpay for these coins.
Seeing 10 oz silver bars selling for $450 now makes me want to unload some of those too but I will continue to hold onto everything else.

Between January 2011 and March 2011, I have sold some common minted silver art bars that I no longer wanted to local dealer for a paper profit. I used that paper profit to buy rare 1-oz silver art bars on ebay that are on my silver art bar wish list. I do not regret selling those common minted silver art bars because I was able to use the proceeds to buy the very rare silver art bars that I wanted. That worked out well for me.

After having slept on it for 3 nights, conferring with those here and IRL I've thought better about selling any silver, no matter how small. To keep from doing this I had to get a little creative and lucky, the parts I needed I found by hunting around a little harder and at a very good price. I also think I've sold one of my art pieces to cover the rest, though it isn't a done deal yet and I'm not going to get what I thought I would earlier but something is better than nothing as it's only wood at the end of the day.
So, my 20 halves have been stashed away for a time of more dire need.

I have sold silver to experience the sell side of things. The way I have approached this however has been to find a good deal on silver, buy it and immediately turn it over in a sale for marginal profit. There's no way I'm selling anything I bought to hold unless I NEED to. Ideally I won't NEED to sell any because I have properly prepared for contingencies. However, in certain scenarios involving a sequence of dire events the metal holdings are viewed as SHTF savings to break the fall. Think, lose my job, car breaks down and I have a serious medical bill all within a couple weeks' time.

Sovs are my favorite, I got about 23 of them. Get one or better a few while you can afford them and beware of fakes. There are tons of fake ones floating around since the early 20th century, they are the ultimate currency recognized everywhere and that`s why they were faked to such degree.

Update: I reckon I'm one lucky feller! As stated I put my halves away and found other means to address my trucks needs (the main priority). Then, a couple days before I was to take her down to the garage dudes my work mate mentions that his son is gifted in mechanical things and hooks us up. In the process of him and I working on the truck it's quickly apparent that we share a ton of the same views as we do here at GSUS! And like us here we have our different forte's as well and it turns out that one of his weaknesses is economics, metals, their history and future etc.. The work on my truck wound up taking the better part of 2 days and for those 2 days we talked continuously on all matters SHTF and prep oriented, we cottoned up to each other just like in my DOOM in the Desert experience with yaw'll, it was very cool!
At the end of the job we were sittin' and having some cold beers and it was time for me to pay the man and us discuss the balance, especially since he was here for pert near 2 days. Then, out of nowhere he asks about silver and bartering for it. I wound up paying him 4 halves, bartering some things I had and shaking hands to new found friendship.
The fiat I saved is probably close to 4 X to the halves ($60) per the time, pain in the ass and work he did to insure my truck could rock and roll if SHTF! He was so tickled to learn about metals and get paid in them to stash back for his family he said that I had paid him in knowledge and by us making each others acquaintance. I was totally shocked and obviously very happy, what a turn of events!
My truck now runs better than it ever has, it's an 88, the MAJOR things wrong have been addressed and then some or fixed altogether. No doubt there's still things to be done but the majority of it was accomplished in 2 days for next to nothing of what it would have cost me had I took it to the garage dudes and got very little done for more $.
Now, if there's a meetup in Fl I have no fear in making the trip and I was lucky enough to meet another one of us, sota speak.

i'm selling 100 ounces tomorrow. my landrover finally exploded on friday when my wife was driving her home. 10 miles from anywhere, 2 little kids, we have to have 2 vehicles. 100 ounces of metal i once paid $800 or so for will be buying us a nice little second vehicle.

Who/where do you think is the best place to sell some silver?
I just looked at Apmex and see that their stated buy prices are for $10,000 amounts!
I used to buy from Apmex but haven't had good feelings about them for about a year now.
