"There’s a silly (or sick, depending on your point of view) fad in Moscow – pet owners are tattooing their cats! "

Truly sick shit and a totally Western influence. In Russia there is a culture of tattoos among the criminal class, every tattoo has a meaning and is "earned". I fail to see how a cat can earn a prison tattoo. Purely decorative tattoos are dumb.

The cat was obviously put under anestisia and probably never had a clue. Guess I don't see the "cruelty". I mean really, I'd rather wake up with a tattoo than my nuts cut off, which is done a thousand times daily to animals.

Good point. No way you could tattoo a cat if it was awake. And cutting nuts off puts it in perspective.

I would love to see a tattoo of a dog, on a cat. That would be hilarious!

Granted, tattooing cats is pretty dumb, but if someone owns a cat, they should be able to do with it whatever they wish, supposing they don't infringe on the rights of anyone else.
And I'd rather be tattooed than neutered also.
People are silly about animals.

Gonzo, have you "owned" a cat? Those of us who "have" know that cats own us ;D.

Guess what, we also think people are animals and cats are gods. I`m even more extreme, IMHO the entire human "civilization`s" purpose is to serve cats. I`ve heard that in Egypt flights are cancelled when cats decide to lie down and relax on the runways, they can`t kick them out and have to wait until they leave on their own. This is probably a joke but Egyptians know a few things about cats...prrrrrrr...

If castrating and ovariohysterectomy are OK, how is tattooing cruel???
People can be so dumb.

The way I look at it is tattooing is cruel. It's painful after the procedure and the anesthesia wear off. Tattooing is for the owner's satisfaction for appearance. It serves no real purpose other than that. I think declawing is cruel too. Again, the owner is being lazy. Teach your cat to not claw on furniture. It's possible. I've done it with all 3 of mine.
Spaying and neutering is to help keep the population down. There are millions of unwanted cats and dogs out there because of lack of spaying and neutering. And ALOT of them end up suffering and/or being euthenized. To me, spaying and neutering is being a responsible owner...

Tattooing doesn't interfere with the cat's biological purpose; to reproduce.
Destroying your animal's ability to further its own kind is worse, procreation-wise, than simply injecting ink in the skin.
As I said before, people should be able to use their property as they see fit.
I am NOT a fan of "animal rights" or any other such nonsense.

These cats do not have any fur, or are they shaved?
To me, this looks like some contest where you take an already hideous looking cat, and make it even uglier.
If I was the cat, I would be pissed off to wake up with tattoos like that.

All that ink ain't cheap and it seems to me it's throwing away good money after bad. Seems like a prime example of stupid human tricks.

Lots of differing opinions, that's what makes the world go around. I think this is so ridiculous, I can hardly believe it is true. Must have a lot of money to "waste". I still would want the "FREEDOM" to choose if that is what I wanted to do, however I would NEVER choose to tattoo a cat. I don't even like it that people get tattoos, but it is their choice.

Hairless breed.
I think when the act supercedes any function other than to make the owner solely "feel good" at the animals expense it's totally fucked.

Let them tat a cat if they want. They cut off the balls and finger and toe nails of cats every day.
I can't help it:

In Soviet Russia, cat owns you!
