I'm noticing that it's not a very wide opening; far less than half the big theaters around here.
I'm sensing this one could go either way. They are fortunate in the "timing" of release in that the theme is so relevant. However, it's going to require that the media catch on to the theme and convey it to the masses. If that doesn't happen, then I don't see this as a "word-of-mouth" movie.

Give the Donald a few weeks to graft this movie onto his presidential campaign.

I'm okay with that, if that's what it takes.

Just saw it. Already one of my favorite movies of all time. It went by so fast. My only complaint is they didn't make it 3 hours. Don't believe the low review scores, the Statists are out in droves giving this movie all 1s without even watching it.
There were maybe 15 people in the entire theater, which isn't a surprise since I live in liberal ass California. I knew the few people in the audience understood, since they would all giggle at when the Statists in the movie spewed their crap.

I might have to check it out. I don't think that anyone else will want to though. kids my age only like massive CGI and ridiculous satanic comedy. The women want to see the comedy and romantic comedies about hot white women falling in love with a perfect Khazar. The young would be the ones who would need to see it.
Anyway, it would be better than dealing with 1500 pages of microscopic print. Where does the this first part end? I wanna see hank go to court and tell the cock suckers that he pleads nothing and doesn't recognize their authority. That could be epic.

I actually never read the book, but it ends when Ellis Wyatt sets his oil on fire, and leaves a giant handwritten sign with "I am leaving it as I found it. Take over. It's yours." Dagny stands over seeing it with the oil fields around her rolling on fire, and she screams in sadness/anguish.

I went and watched it last night here are my impressions:
If you have not read the book you would be lost at times, due to the plot being accelerated to fit in a movie (not nearly as bad as Dune though)
It does a suprisingly good job of setting the senatio in the 21st century I thought that may become the films Achilles heel but I was happly mistaken.
The film is done extremly well for the small budget it had Big hollywood crap would not make this fillm any better it does just fine as is. (If you have seen Children of Men you will understand my point that big money is not required to make a good film)
The demographic of the film goers was what you might expect for this film on a Saturday afternoon. There was a standing ovation at the end. We knew that this film is not made for the mainstream.
I still wonder why it was allowed to be released right now, other than to spur on the class warfare escalation.
Now the opening previews were interesting there was an Ilegal alien makes it good in the opressive USA tearjerker story, a Oath keeper ripoff, and some big brother is great movies.
That is my Review of the whole shebang I don't regret the 14 FRN's it cost me one bit. Now having to go to the giagantic Seattle area mall to watch it........

I saw it today in Madison Wisconsin at a big multiplex. It drew a pretty good crowd, but I bet 90% were over fifty years of age. I've never seen so much gray hair in a movie theater before.

Coming April 29th to a local theater, maybe they are doing a slow rollout for some reason.

Just saw it tonight. Here's my review.
As mightymanx said, the plot was extremely accelerated, and the multitude of characters that Rand slowly developed in the book were introduced very quickly. Having read the book I was able to keep up, but I wondered about the rest of the audience.
Given that, the movie is very well done and lived up to my best expectations, as I was skeptical that they could pull this off and do the book justice. The casting was excellent with superb characterizations of the many characters, and the acting was generally good. The critical role of Dagney Taggert is spot on, played beautifully by TV actress Taylor Schilling, who has very limited big screen experience. The script also is generally good, with some occasional clunky dialogue that I was able to overlook.
A major concern for me going in was the "modernization" of the plot, being set in 2016. I must say they pulled this off just fine. The resurgent importance of railroads was explained by the destruction of commercial airways and trucking due to extraordinary gas prices ($37.50/gallon), so the fate of the railway system seemed relevant. And what they did visually with the actual railway scenes and modernization from Rearden Metal far exceeded my expectations.
I went into the movie expecting a C+, and I'd give it a B+ (and I'm a hard grader!). Since the theme is so important, and the plot was so accelerated, I was wondering what the sparse audience (maybe a dozen?) would think. The movie ends quite abruptly, and the guy in front of me threw up his hands in frustration, so I asked him what he thought. He said it was thoroughly enjoyable, but he wanted to see more; he said he would preferred to sit there another hour to learn more, as he was completely engaged in the plot, and then was disappointed at how the plot is not nearly resolved. He had not read the book. I talked to another guy who also had not read the book; he said he really enjoyed it and can't wait for Part 2. Perhaps others might not be as forgiving with the ending, as it was probably very unsatisfying for those who haven't read the book, which is most people.
My biggest concern is that this movie will not get the attention required to get a big box office, and I think they are counting on this revenue stream to continue with Parts 2 and 3. Very few theaters are playing it; only 8 theaters in all of eastern Massachusetts! Hopefully they will expand the release. I really hope it does well.

Well if they only spent $10 million making it, they really don't need to do that good to turn a profit, and be able to make another one at this point, in my opinion.

That's basically how I felt. I think if they added another hour to it with it explaining the backgrounds of the characters more it would help. That's my only real gripe.

Yes and I always do. ;)
I also concur with the others that if they had spent more time developing the characters it would help the people that have not red the book greatly. Like Hank's family draging him down. etc. etc.

I went and saw it.
I thought they could have sprinkled some flashbacks of Dagny and Francisco as ambitious teenage lovers since the book devoted a lot to that dynamic.
I don't appreciate them casting Eddie Willers as a black man. Jim Taggart was whiney and inept in the book, he's cold and arrogant in the movie.
Hank's mom seemed senile rather than cold hearted as she was in the book. The part for Hank's wife was cast PERFECTLY.
John Galt remained a mystery in the book and was constantly referred to as "the destroyer" until Dagny crash landed in Galt's Gulch and met him. The movie gave this away at the end of part 1.
All nitpicking aside, if I hadn't read the book and saw part 1, I would be rushing out to buy a copy.

Dustin Walker, The Daily News Tuesday, April 19, 2011
Freight service along the E&N Railway could cease within a year unless funding becomes available to upgrade the tracks, warns the railway's operator.
Passenger service was suspended indefinitely last month because of broken rail ties.
However, Freight service hasn't been affected yet, said Frank Butzelaar, president of Southern Railway of Vancouver Island.
Trains must slow down for damaged sections of the railway, he said, which has made it impossible for passenger trains to keep to a reasonable schedule. A few hours worth of delays is less of an issue for freight trains hauling feed supplies or propane. But Butzelaar said that if the track continues to deteriorate and forces the freight trains to even slower speeds, the railway will no longer be a viable mode of transportation.
"It gets to a point where it becomes impractical to go much slower. Then we can't get all the work done we need to get done," said Butzelaar.
That would leave the railway's customers, which include Superior Propane and Top Shelf Feed, scrambling to find other ways to move their product.
If freight service does stop, Butzelaar said Southern Railway would help its customers find alternative ways to move their product.
As many as 51 of the Island's communities and regional districts passed an emergency resolution demanding a meeting with Transportation minister Blair Lekstrom and Premier Christy Clark to discuss the railway.
The communities, which own the track through the Island Corridor Foundation, say they need $15 million from the provincial and federal governments to fix broken rail ties before service.
Butzelaar said Southern Railway told the ICF in 2006 that one day they would no longer be able to operate the railway for the foundation unless more money was put into the line.
"That day is really approaching quickly."

B.C.'s transportation minister says he will meet with concerned Vancouver Island mayors as early as this week to see if there is a way to save the E&N railway.

Just a heads up for those of you who missed it at the theater, it is now available for purchase/rent.

Atlas Shrugged is now on Netflix for those of you who missed it. I watched it last night, and my impression was that a 2 hour movie is just not enough time to develop the kind of story that Atlas Shrugged is. The character development was infinitesimal, and unless you've already read the book I imagine it will be sort of hard to follow. One of the greatest characters in the book, Francisco D'anconia, is hardly a part of this movie at all, and if you didn't read the book you'd be confused as to what his character's role is and why he's even in the movie. It is refreshing though to see a movie attempt to portray hard working business owners trying to navigate a world where every next minute is a new legislation hampering their work, where the majority who look to the gov't for salvation are suffering while those who actually work and produce provide a better world for those around them.
