How big brother in the UK works:
1. buy TV equipment for a gift and use your Tesco loyalty card
2. Tesco passes your data to the government
3. Government starts harassing you: 'What, you don't watch TV'?

I never understood why you need a licence to watch TV. I never tell them anything useful, I pay cash and I don't use loyalty cards.

I know the TV license fee in the UK is real, and it's a significant chunk of cash-- what better reason not to have/watch TV!

aww jeez looky there, every time I check that number gets bigger, 1,479 licensed architects & engineers (http://ae911truth.org) now calling the official 9/11 CT a fraud! ;D

Incidentally, I do recall shortly after this BBC/WTC7 story was (re)surfaced in '06 or so by 911 researchers, hearing some UK truthers filed with whatever public complaint process was available, grievances that BBC was in violation of their charter, something about the public trust/interest, & they should be "punished" somehow; but the story just sort of went away, never heard any updates.

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.
It costs £145.50 for colour and £49.00 for a black and white TV Licence.

What if a TV Licence is not needed
The law states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes, on any device, as they're being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
You don't need a licence if you don't use any of these devices to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV - for example, if you use your TV only to watch DVDs or play video games, or you only watch programmes on your computer after they have been shown on TV. If this is the case, please let us know, as this helps us to keep our database up to date and means you won't receive the standard letters we send to unlicensed addresses.

What's the punishment for not getting their TV-watching permit? They send you to jail, where you sit and watch their propaganda for free??? I don't see what's to stop them from requiring a "permit" to play DVDs, playing video games, or taking a piss, either. Bizarre and sad for humanity.

Come to think of it, you know in the states, I can think of a permit at least halfway as loony a this... take your dog to a vet for a rabies vaccination... the vet informs the county, then you'll get a notice in the mail (with the sheriff's seal) that you owe money for a pet permit. They can suck it.

I remember hearing that in the UK they don't allow companies to "own the pipes" and as a result they get faster internet and more phone options at cheaper prices then we do in the states
Here Comcast, Verizon and others owns the wires so can charge whatever they want because they essentially have a monopoly but in the UK they have many companies willing to cut costs because they can deliver content over wires paid for by others.
We must have members from over there that can confirm it :conf:

This has been going on as long as TV sets were being sold in England folks. This is nothing new, and yes it's quite Orwellian.
The BBC "British Broadcasting Corporation" is a government agency. And it's the only game in town. And how they pay for programming they say is by TV licensing.
Back in the olden days, the DTI "Department of Trade and Industries" (Which had a RF enforcement Arm like the FCC) would go around the council houses armed with a small Yagi antenna and a radio. They'd visit houses that didn't pay the TV tax. If they found radio emissions from the local oscillator of a TV, they'd leave a fine on your door. If you repeatedly offended, they'd haul you off to the clink.
Here are a few links about TV Licensing.

Here's a chap who got rid of his TV 8 years ago. The licensing board doesn't seem to think so.

And here are some Limeys saying they love the TV tax because it means Ad free "programming" straight from the BBC.

This has been ongoing for decades in almost all European countries, I bought my first TV in the eighties, in Sweden, and a couple of weeks later I got a threatening letter, from the Swedish Radio Board, that they knew I had bought a TV, and that I should pay a TV licence, and that if I didn't commit to this I was liable to a fine, when the inspector was knocking at my door. Sometimes I got notices in my mailbox that TV inspector Mr Svensson had been there, but I was not at home, and that I should report if I was watching TV. Same in UK...
