Let me get this straight. It is my God-given right to impregnate and then abandon as many women as I please. But if I don't abandon them I'm breaking the law?

I think you can keep them around, you just can't marry them. You can live with multiple women and raise their kids as long as you are not married. You'd be their baby's daddy, I believe is the correct term.

I have a neighbor that dates a guy that has 5 ex-wives and 8 kids. He's violent and has no job.

There's a saying that 10% of men are sleeping with 90% of the women. Unfortunately, sometimes that 10% is not the men that should have their genes passed on...the future does not look good in that regard, imo.

I'm always interested in discussions like this... I was raised about 100 miles away from a Mormon polygamous group, and while I never really socialized with them or got to know them, they seemed like decent enough people from a distance.
How many of you would have more than one wife/girlfriend/whatever if it were socially acceptable, legal, etc.
If not, what moral grounds would you use to defend monogamy as the correct/best/only option?

I choose monogamy because I enjoy living in a highly industrialized 1st world country. Married men provide for their families and their efforts are channeled into the advancement of society. In polygamous societies, the majority of men are unable to find wives, become disaffected and end up doing anti-social things like joining militias and causing unrest.

For those of you who would rather live in a polygamous society, consider this:

In a society where everyone is free to love whoever they want, the majority of women will choose to have exclusive relationships with the same 10-20% of the most attractive men. Would you consider yourself to be in the top 10-20%? If not, you are locked out of having any relationship. Your girlfriend/wife has been taken by the same douchebag who also took the girlfriends/wives of 4-5 other beta men.

Indeed, very true! This is the modern society now. Though the saying goes...when it rains, it pours. When you are in the top 10-20%, even rarely, it's obvious. Women come out of the wood works.

Right now I'm not in that percentage, and haven't been in awhile. >:( ;D

I personaly think the State has no buisness making laws on the matter period.

The Church marries people. The State deals with property rights.

If more than 2 consenting adults (emancipated or minors with parent approval) want to enter into a property agrement so be it.

If your church sanctions it as well that is a bonus.

I'm not taking a side, just laying out the facts.

As long as you don't get permission from the state to marry, ie 'marriage licence', then you can come to what ever marriage contract you can agree too. With as many people as you want.

Do the research into why a marriage license was issued in the first place. It wasn't so two normal people could get married. That wasn't until much later.
