View Full Version : THE SILVER SHIELDS

For Silver Shield, a history lesson we can learn from, never give up, we got lots of fight.
THE SILVER SHIELDS
From, N G L Hammond, The Macedonian State
( The greatest authority on the creators of the Hellenistic States. )
Some of the greatest and oldest troops Alexander had.
Average age 60 + . Called the Silver Shields for their gray hair.
5,000-10,000 strong.
The Romans too had similar units, the most feared, average age 50.
Alexander had a top general, Antipater I think, over 80 fighting on front lines.
Leonidas at Thermopylae was 65 and most of his men were up there as well, 50 maybe.
The older warriors were skilled and had lessor fear of death, made them very dangerous,
considering they also had some technology on their side as well.
Many people here would say, no way, these people were healthy, farmers and mountain peoples.
Stay healthy and strong, exercise your mind and body, educate,
live honorably and demand no less from your leaders.
On the politics of this history, half is good and other is not, lessons of empire and destroying yourself.
Alexanders own troops most likely murdered him by poison.
Alexander is still studied today in War College, one of the greatest generals
who employed these Silver Shields to great effect.
Worst case be an army of one, prepared and ready for defense. Never give up.
Once upon a time, slaying tyrants was sport and part of Western Literature.
You can be dangerous to the last breath to the tyrants, even if bed ridden.

The Argyraspides (in Greek: Ἀργυράσπιδες "Silver Shields"), were a division of the Macedonian army of Alexander the Great, who were so called because they carried silver-plated shields. They were picked men, were commanded by Nicanor, the son of Parmenion, and were held in high honour by Alexander. They were hypaspists, having changed their name to the Argyraspides whilst in India under Alexander (Arr. Anab. 7.11.3). After the death of Alexander (323 BC) they followed Eumenes. They were veterans, and although most of them were over sixty, they were feared and revered due to their battle skills and experience.
At the Battle of Gabiene they settled with Antigonus when he managed to take possession of their baggage train (consisting of their families and the result of forty years of plunder). They obtained the return of their possessions, but in exchange delivered their General Eumenes to him (316 BC).
Antigonus, however, soon broke up the corps, finding it too turbulent to manage.[1] He sent them to Sibyrtius, the Macedonian satrap of Arachosia, with the order to dispatch them by small groups of two or three to dangerous missions, so that their numbers would rapidly dwindle.
The Seleucid kings of Syria employed an infantry phallangite corps of the same name. At the Battle of Raphia in 217 BC the Argyraspides took up positions against the Ptolemaic phalanx. Polybius describes them as being armed in the Macedonian manner (Polyb. 5.79.4, 82.2). Their position besides the king at the Battle of Magnesia suggests that they were the premier infantry guard unit in the Seleucid army. They were men chosen from the whole kingdom (Polyb. 5.79.4) and constituted a corps of 10,000 men at Raphia. At the Daphne parade held by Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 166 BC the Argyraspides were 5,000 strong. However the corps of men described by Polybius as being armed and dressed in the 'Roman fashion' numbered 5,000, and Bar-Kochva suggests that these men, who are described as being in the prime of life, might have also been a division of the Argyraspides, putting the number of the corps back up to 10,000 strong. The Roman Emperor Alexander Severus, among other things in which he imitated Alexander the Great, had in his army bodies of men who were called argyroaspides and chrysaspides.[2] Livy mentions a cavalry corps called silvershields as the royal cohort in the army of Antiochus III the Great in Magnesia.[3]

The Rays on the shield Silver Shield uses are the Rays of Apollo.
Plato's Light in The Republic is Apollo, the light of The Cave is Apollo.
Apollo is the Sun, allegory, myth.
Wake up your fellow man. It fits.
Silver Shield is one of the Philosopher Kings in The Republic bringing The Light to people, Truth and Justice.
SilverMagnet is here too, lol .
Magnetism
One of the regions colonized by the Magnetes was a primary source for mysterious stones that could attract or repel each other, leading to the modern term for magnets and magnetism. Some suggest that it was Magnesia ad Sipylum, others that it was the prefecture of Magnesia in Thessaly; this has been debated both in modern times and in antiquity without resolution. [3][4]

I don't watch that, don't agree with gladiator type sports like that and I don't have cable anymore.
That's one tough guy being that old pounding flesh.
N G L Hammond writes about WWII being SOE in Upper Macedonia, the people inspired him,
and he went on to become the greatest authority on the ancient world, passed away at 94
and wrote his last book in his last year, on Alexander, a general reader. Hammond is Scots Irish,
just like my classics teacher, my greatest teachers on this subject.
Leonidas at Thermopylae was 65 and most of his men were up there as well,
most of them were 50 + .

Silver Shield's reconstructed shield.

My own pic from a local small museum of whats left of the bronze layer.
Much better finds at other museums.

Philip II, King of Macedonia, 359-336 BC
( notice small rays of Apollo on gold, it is used interchangeably with other images,
the eagle, lighting, Winged Victory Angel, it all represents Zues " the justice giver " and Justice.
http://i51.tinypic.com/s4t92a.jpg
Again Rays of Apollo, Zues seated, Eagle.
Athena is represented the same way.
Modern coins of Lady Liberty and Britannia are represented same way.
Same images are used even today.
http://i51.tinypic.com/245mzw3.jpg
Octadrachm Ptolemy III Issued by Ptolemy IV
The Ptolemies were from Upper Macedonia, here they are representing themselves
as Just rulers by crowning themselves with the Rays of Apollo.
http://i56.tinypic.com/2ef22pj.jpg
Many of the above images are interchangeable, The Rays of Apollo, Eagle, Winged Victory.
The more coins you have to look at this becomes very clear. They all represent Justice .
Many of the above images are used with Athena as well. Easy to find online.
Have a look here.

Britannia, portrayed offering Peace, just like Athena and Eagle offers.

I got an offer for you, FREE SAE .
You buy The Macedonian State above used and The Rise of the Dorians used.
If you can't get The Macedonian State get The Miracle That was Macedonia,
that is more of a general reader, Hammond's books are very thick and he
has taken the same works, updated them, and condensed them, made them
more appealing as reader, most of his books and work is University level
courses, he even does really complicated studies, on sources, Arrian, etc,
whole books, the guy was a machine, his whole life at this. Writes an incredible
book as SOE.
Those two books, because you are a student of history, you must read them.
These are my cherry picks for you and they are very important works.
Considering your interest in the Hellenistic States, Philosophy, Christianity and general history of the area.
If these works are not great keepers contributing greatly I will give you one SAE for each.
Through and intermediary if you want like Gaillo.
Many of Hammond's books are hard to get and expensive, some impossible to get.
What do you say DMac ? This offer only applies to you.

That is from your website, it is a real shield, have a look at the Seleukos silver above.
That is just one example of coinage and art of this.
These people standardized coinage, the above PM's are some examples from various mints.
The ancient world was flooded with Macedonian and Hellenistic Kingdom silver and gold.
Are you worried about being associated with this history ?
All the images used interchangeably are positive, they can be described by one word, Justice.
From Greek Mythology, and all related Goddesses, Freedom, Good Order, Peace, Justice,
recognized as mutually inclusive, no Justice, no Peace, etc.
The Hellenistic Kingdoms were Western Kingdoms, Schools, Theaters and Libraries were opened.
They were Federal States, all local laws, traditions, etc , remained in non Greek areas.
The area liberated was already full of Greek city states, the Persians were booted out, the original
military action was viewed as liberating, even the Jews had nice things to say at first.
It was one of the greatest periods of advancement and prosperity on the planet.
The groundwork for Christianity was laid. Scholars say this not me. The Romans took
over after they beat the Macedonians on the mainland not long after.
Here is Alexanders tutor, Aristotle,
"The most hated sort of wealth getting and with the greatest reason, is usury, which makes a gain out of money itself and not from the natural object of it. For money was intended to be used in exchange but not to increase at interest. And this term interest, which means the birth of money from money is applied to the breeding of money because the offspring resembles the parent. Wherefore of all modes of getting wealth, this is the most unnatural." --Aristotle (1258b Politics)
The andidote of 50 enemies is 1 friend. -Aristotle
You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor. -Aristotle
''Tolerance and apathy are virtues of a dying society'' - Aristotle
Who are the Idiots ?
From Plato (Aristotles teacher and Solon's blood relative, Mr Republic) on apathy,
the word Idiot itself comes from describing those guilty of apathy,
those not interested in city state issues, politics, tyrants rule the apathetic.
One last gold coin. Winged Victory crowning something,
the little angel, good shall prevail over evil and those guilty of hubris will
be destroyed, mostly reserved for tyrants. Usually Athena wields her.
Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC.
Gold Distater struck c. 324-318 BC.

Some advantages of greater age:
What you have lost in strength, you can make up with cunning.
What you have lost in reaction time, you can make up in level headedness.
Apart from this you have less to lose. They can take your last 20 years of increasing misery, but you have allready reared your children to be stand alone adults.
The Japanese should send their 60 year olds to Fukushima, to save Japan for coming generations...

A) I was Japanese
B) My children were adults, and not dependent on me.
I am 42, and my children are 7 and 11, now. At this point, even if I were Japanese, I wouldn't go. They need my guidance, more than my radiation fighting skills, for their future survival. ;D
