A video that has garnered attention within the LGBT community appears to show a Baltimore County transgender woman being assaulted physically by two patrons of McDonalds on Monday, April 18, as employees from the restaurant stood by, one of them recording the incident on a portable phone.

The Bilerico Project reported on the video today, which shows the woman battered after being kicked, punched and dragged on the floor. The video of the incident was posted by the McDonald's employee on a web site called "World Star hip Hop.com."

Local transgender activist Dana Beyer expressed outrage about the incident, noting one immediate impact of the departure earlier today of Equality Maryland's executive director, Morgan Meneses-Sheets.

"The problem is that there is no executive director to deal with this," she says. "There's no one to go to. There's certainly no functional leader in the functional LGBT [Maryland] community. That's problematic because this is what the organization is supposed to be dealing with."

According to Bilerico, the attack occured at the McDonald's in Rosedale, in the 6300 block of Kenwood Ave. in Baltimore County.

Bill Browning at Bilerico wrote, "While you can see the manager yelling stop at the two women attacking the customer, none of the other employees even try to intervene or keep the women from dragging the victim across the restaurant floor. Instead, it's the elderly female customer that seems to do the most to help. The manager and employees simply watch as the victim starts to have a seizure and offer no help whatsoever."

[UPDATE: In a statement issued to Metro Weekly, Equality Maryland's board president Chuck Butler said the organization is saddened by the "senseless violence."

"No person ever deserves to be a victim of violence regardless of their gender identity or presentation," he said.

"We encourage the State's Attorney General to investigate this as a gate crime based on gender identity. We are encouraged that McDonald's is working with local police to investigate this incident, and hope that the company will follow-up with appropriate disciplinary action against any employees involved. We remain committed to advancing gender identity protections for the entire state of Maryland and will continue to work with local organizations and legislators to advance these protections."

It's a big problem with kids today, no honor. A lot of them have no clue as to what is right or what is wrong. I've dealt with some of these kids, on particular time there was a group of them, "rat packs" they are called. They go around and beat people up, take their money. One time a group of them beat up an ice cream man, just to take the man's ice cream. They committed robbery, and assault, etc...for what? Ice cream? Those kids had no clue they did anything wrong too.

Years ago when I was in college working at the gas station. I chased a group of mexican gang bangers away from beating up a young white guy. I went at them with a tire iron, and they all scattered in different directions.

You are right about this poor woman being the victim of hatred. I don't necessarily agree that it's hatred for white women in general, because there's definitely some contradictions going on. Well, I meant to post something here when the thread was recently started, the video infuriates me to no end. Most of my anger doesn't go towards the attackers, but towards the personnel at this establishment. The personnel let it start, fine maybe it all happened quickly the 1st tie, the second time should have been a good opportunity to warn the assailants and dispurse, but no.. they comeback a 3rd time and drag this person to continue beatdown and a fourth time even after an elderly woman is the only one risking her fragile age to protect another. I think he went pretty soft on them. This is precisely the situation to stomp the guy`s throat so he never gets up again. I was once attacked by a crazy drunken dude who tried to kill me for no reason, just jumped on me and my friend on the subway. Once I knocked him down I jumped on him and kept jumping up and down on him until I made sure he stayed down for a good while or forever. The sheer killing instinct kicks in and you don`t wanna risk the attacker getting up and producing a weapon.

County police confirmed that the attack occurred April 18 in the 6300 block of Kenwood Ave. Police said the 14-year-old girl has been charged as a juvenile, while charges were pending against an 18-year-old woman. Reached Saturday, police officials said the investigation was continuing.

The police report does not provide a motive but quotes one of the suspects saying that the fight was "over using a bathroom."

Polis suffered cuts to her mouth and face, and said she had a seizure. She also acknowledged that she was intoxicated at the time of the assault.

On Saturday she said she continued to suffer from painful bruises.

Polis, who said she had a sex-change operation to become a woman, said this isn't the first time that she's been picked on physically because of her sexual identity. She said she's been subjected to beatings and even sexual assaults.

She said seeing herself all over the Internet and all over the news has been "like walking out of the closet all over again." Polis is concerned that the public attention could trigger more violence — and worries it could hurt her chances of getting a job. "I want to cry, but I need to hold my head up," she said.

Her twin brother, Matty Polis, who also lives in Baltimore, said it's been painful to watch her have to endure these sorts of attacks.

"My sister has gotten this her entire life," Matty Polis said. "Being the way she is, she's always had a hard time."

Polis, who was raised by her grandmother in Dundalk and Essex, graduated from Chesapeake High and hasn't had a job or stable place to stay for the past two years, according to her mother, Angela Thomas.

Equality Maryland has called on state Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler to step in and investigate the case as a hate crime.

"As a community we remain horrified that transgender citizens are so vulnerable that they can be brutalized … for simply walking down the street," said Lisa Polyak, vice president of the board of directors for Equality Maryland. "She was simply trying to use a public accommodation. People should not feel threatened when they exist in public space."

Polyak added, "This is why we need a statewide law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity and gender expression." The advocacy group has fought repeatedly to have such a law passed by Maryland's General Assembly.

Scott Shellenberger, the state's attorney for Baltimore County, said his office has not yet received the file and has not interviewed the victim because the charges were filed late in the week. He said his office will likely interview the victim in the next week and a half and gather additional evidence to determine if the attack was a hate crime.

"When the case was first presented, none of those facts had been revealed to the police — which is why the charges were the way they were," Shellenberger said. "We can certainly revisit the motive for the attack and determine if we need to make additional charges."

The three-minute video clip was apparently first posted on YouTube, then taken down by administrators who said it violated the site's policies. But it popped back up on other sites and was ultimately linked from the Drudge Report, which gave it top billing for much of the day Friday.

The video begins with two women near a bathroom door kicking and hitting a woman who is lying on the ground.

An employee repeatedly tries to separate them, but the attackers continue to stomp and kick the victim in the head. People yell, "Stop! Stop!" to no avail, though others can be heard laughing. An older woman at one point also attempts to pull the attackers away and is shoved.

About halfway through the clip, the attackers drag Polis by her hair to the front door. That is where the victim is sitting before another blow to the head causes an apparent seizure.

Throughout the attack, a man is filming and does not intervene. But when the victim appears to have a seizure, he yells, "She having a seizure, yo. … Police on their way. Y'all better get out of here."

The owner of the Rosedale McDonald's announced Saturday afternoon that the employee who taped the beating had been fired.

"My first and foremost concern is with the victim," franchise owner Mitchell McPherson said in a statement, adding that action might be taken against other restaurant workers as well. "I'm as shocked and disturbed by this assault as anyone would be. The behavior displayed in the video is unfathomable and reprehensible."

Polis said she plans to take legal action against the restaurant.

"Anyone in my predicament should not be afraid to walk the streets," Polis said. "They should not have to go into a restaurant and get gawked at and made fun of. They shouldn't be afraid to leave the house. It's just wrong."

Well.

I did not watch the video, and I will not. I don't need to see it, and I don't want the images burned into my psyche.

However I have followed most of this thread, and I would just like to say that I find it very telling that this is being investigated as a hate crime.

Why?

Because the victim was transgender, so this serves a couple purposes for the babylonian pharisiac overlords

1) Continue to incite racial tensions between blacks and whites
2) Make white people take a stance where they defend perverted deviancy

If this was a white girl, I have no doubt that it would be brushed under the rug. Now that it's a man who is transgendered, it will recieve attention. The white race is being encouraged and conditioned to accept homosexuality, sexual perversion, gender manipulation, etc as normal, as a right, as something to defend. This is being used as psychological leverage, imo.

This transgender person represents most of the things I personally stand against, yet even I recognized myself getting caught up in the fever. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying anything about this situation is acceptable, I am just saying that this situation is going to be used to serve a purpose, psychologically.

Yes! Girls and women should be taught to defend themselves against aggressors! I taught my daughter when she was in 2nd grade, and was repeatedly bullied by three four boys who grabbed her by the arms and hit her, to pull back wring her arms out of their grip and punch their leader really hard in the stomach. She did it once, the leader of the pack went away crying, and the others disbursed quickly. They never teased or bullied her again, and she grew a foot taller. Daddy was so proud! For my son who is in second grade, these things seems to be picked up naturally, he seems to be a good boxer and threws a good punch. Both of them are comfortable defending themselves against bullies and attackers, but they would never be a bully or an attacker themselves... I am proud of them, and the high morals and mental and physical strength they have...

I totally agree. What I find most disturbing is how blacks are portrayed in the media. If you had no/little interaction with blacks and got your opinions from the MSM (and so many people do) you'd think they're the greatest people in the world. They never commit crimes, always there to give a helping hand, a hero in the waiting, etc.

People here are shocked and feel uncomfortable when I tell them the truth. Not all of them are bad; but good God, so many of them are.
