Los Angeles (CNN) -- A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter had to make an emergency landing Sunday morning after a gunman opened fire on the chopper, authorities said.

The helicopter landed safely and the pilot and observer on board were not injured, said police Detective Gus Villanueva.

The incident occurred in the Van Nuys area, when police got a call at around 6 a.m. local time (9 a.m . ET) of shots being fired, police said. The helicopter was responding as backup to a patrol car dispatched to the scene.

The helicopter was at the Van Nuys airport after the incident, and was to be put on a flat-bed truck to be towed downtown for investigation and repair, authorities said.

The apparent shooter eventually was subdued by his family members, Villanueva said. A semi-automatic rifle was recovered, he said.

Police got multiple calls that a second gunman was involved, and a search was conducted Sunday afternoon, Villanueva said. That search was called off later, Villanueva said.

We don't need drones.

Lobbying Report: Drones Fly Through Congress to Enter US Skies (http://www.truthout.org/lobbying-report-drones-fly-through-congress-enter-us-skies/1302937200)

Within weeks and possibly days, President Obama is likely to sign into law a bill that will bring unmanned aerial vehicles - drones - into US general airspace, crisscrossing the country in company with passenger planes and other human-carrying aircraft.

The story of how planes without on-board pilots will gain entry into our crowded airspace, where birds are life threatening, possibly within the next three years, is one involving campaign contributions, jobs and fear. As we will see, safety appears not to be the top priority.

I became aware of the pro-drone legislation from a February 10, 2011, Syracuse Post Standard report that Sen. Charles Schumer (D-New York) was supporting an amendment to the pending Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill (S. 223) that would create test zones for the introduction of drones into general airspace.

Senator Schumer was interested in the pro-drone amendment because MQ-9 Reaper drones, killer drones that are flying over Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, are stationed at Hancock Air Base near Syracuse. However, FAA safety restrictions have limited drone flights out of Hancock.

"If Schumer's legislative move succeeds this week," said the Post Standard, "it would help ensure the future of 1,215 jobs at the (air) base in Mattydale (New York) and potentially lead to millions of dollars in radar research contracts for local defense companies."

Not Arabs, Cholo's man. I overheard these two police chopper pilots talking about one of their sorties over a wedding in East LA once. It was considered "chic" to fire your AK-47 in the air during some of the more rowdy parties. Anyways, one of the MD500s was dispatched to check it out. The guy ended up having a few toes shot off. He was still able to use his blasted foot to control the rotor and land the thing.

Mexicans love firing their guns into the air. Every 4th and New Years Eve you can hear tons of gunfire in the hood.

We have some idiots that fly a huge blimp over my area. They fly it very low, it looks like a big target in the sky. Every time I see that thing I think "are these guys stupid?" One of these days a trigger happy turd is going to shoot it down.
