Now the typewriter era is officially over.

Godrej & Boyce's Milind Dukle tells the Business Standard:

"From the early 2000 onwards, computers started dominating. All the manufacturers of office typewriters stopped production, except us. Till 2009, we used to produce 10,000 to 12,000 machines a year.

"We stopped production in 2009 and were the last company in the world to manufacture office typewriters. Currently, the company has only 500 machines left. The machines are of Godrej Prima, the last typewriter brand from our company, and will be sold at a maximum retail price of Rs 12,000."

The factory has been converted to a refrigerator manufacturing unit.

Maybe it is time to start hoarding mechanical typewriters?

My office has 2 dozen of them. I'd say the market is in parts and service.

Was trying to explain to a younger one at the office how to get a new line in the same cell in a spreadsheet and used the term "carriage return" (the correct term for this still) and he looked at me like I was nuts and asked why I would use such a strange word and what it meant.

I got my first typewriter in 1960 by selling Christmas cards door-to-door in my neighborhood. There were different premiums available for different sales volume levels. It was a basic Royal compact model in a leather zip-up carrying case. It served me well for close to 35 years. I was thrilled to have earned it.
