More than 75,000 people applied for 2,000 jobs that McDonald’s Corp. has filled in Illinois, northwest Indiana and southern Wisconsin after the Oak Brook-based company’s first “National Hiring Day” on April 19. Of the 2,000 jobs filled, more than 1,000 are in the Chicago area, a McDonald’s spokeswoman said Thursday. The fast-food chain’s managers expect to continue to hire more people, though no estimate is available on how many more, the spokeswoman said.

A snippet from a poster on another forum:

On my bus ride to my part-time job, I sometimes chat with a gal who works at a McDonalds near my store. Yesterday, I asked her how the nationwide McD job fair went. She said she was surprised by how many folks applied. Then I asked her about her hours -- she's a permanent worker who has worked there over a year -- she said she got 20-30 hrs....

Every TWO weeks. So 10 to 15 a week. And she said she works a lot of 3 hour shifts. She said the MANAGERS only work 25 to 30 hours a week.

McD ALWAYS hires about 50k people nationwide each year to "help out" during their busy summer season. This whole thing is just a publicity ploy, no doubt in response to all the "why don't you get off your high-horse and just get a job at McDonald's" statements. During their press push, spokespeople kept driving home the concept that folks can have a great career at McD.

Right. If you can survive a summer working 10 hours a week at minimum wage, then somehow get picked to continue permanently, you may SOMEDAY have a chance to become a manager, and work a whole 25 hours a week for a couple of bucks more a hour. Lucky you.

This is even more scary. From ZeroHedge lastweek.

McDonalds Hires 62,000, Turns Away Over 938,000 Applicants For Minimum Wage, Part-Time Jobs (http://www.zerohedge.com/article/mcdonalds-hires-62000-turns-away-over-938000-applicants-minimum-wage-part-time-jobs)

When I was going through school I worked as a driver and forklift operator at this warehouse. Crappy wage, no skill needed.

Talked with the boss a lot and one thing he always had was applications. Applications came in every week. Almost paradoxically, the one thing we never had was enough employees. No one actually wanted to work their ass off for a fairly low wage. So why all the applications? Why would people apply to the place for a job they didn't want? Well, it turns out they were applying because they had to apply some places to keep some sort of govt. benefits going. So they could apply, and whatever govt agency could phone up the company and ask "Did this guy apply?" "Yep" "You gonna hire him?" "Nope."

Perhaps there's a condition on benefits in the US right now that is making people apply to whatever they can?

Or their 99 weeks are up and they are desperate for any type of "income" to help satisfy their daily needs like food, and a place to sleep.

yes, this.

One of my clients office manager had been there since they opened a number of years ago. She was let go, told her they were restructuring her position.

She said that in 37 years of working she never had to even consider unemployment. She dropped off a resume, but that she had to apply to 4 places a week because those were the rules.

I could still tell she had been crying a week later, it totally destroyed her emotionally I think.

Not to mention all of the unemployment is done online now. I have seen it, you must click a box that says "i looked for work this week', 'i was able to work this week'. Only people with no internet (hint, hint) must fill out apps, and get a biz card to prove they were out looking for work.

The stick your hand out.....And magically 'money' appears.
