Sophia Onalee was born April 29th at 1:56pm. She weighed in at 5lbs 1 ounce. She had some complications from the low birth weight mostly with low glucose. After talking with the delivery nurse, midwife and the NICU doctor it was discovered that Sophia was born about 2 weeks late and that as a result she used up any available "baby fat", and glucose stores. No one is sure why it happens, was just told in some instances a child can be born late. But that it should of been caught by the periodic checkups and sonograms.
Mom and Sophia are doing well and I am attaching a picture. After 5 days in NICU we're all very glad to be home.

That's awesome. My daughter is now 4 years old, she was our first too, and this thread brings back memories of when she was born. I'm very happy for you and your wife. My daughter is the jewel of my life and I know yours will be the same for you. I hope you're ready for your whole life to change!

Big congrats!
Now buy her a Glock and an ounce of gold to commemorate this day. :)
She already has an SAE in her room tucked away in a safe place for when she's old enough to understand what is money, and what is fiction. ;D

Sophia was born about 2 weeks late and that as a result she used up any available "baby fat", and glucose stores.
When my daughter was born, she didn't take to the nipple very well, she barely ate, and over the next 48 hours lost 24% of her body weight. The hospital had a policy if the newborn lost 25% or more of their body weight in 48 hours they would offer to keep us there until the baby would put on some weight. Since we were just under that limit we went home and she eventually understood that she had to eat, but it was a little scary having a newborn lose so much weight so fast!

Her gyno was the first one to give us the date. They said that her LMP could of been off because she still had a period, but it was light.

When Sophia was first born they placed her on my wife (skin to skin) and she started rooting around and wanting to eat immediately. She ate for probably a good 30 minutes before falling asleep. After an hour or so is when they put her on the scale and we got to see how tiny she really was. Her Blood glucose levels were 80 at the time, but shortly after dropped down to 23. She had used up her glucose stores and mothers milk was not in yet. Colostrum is low in sugar and that's why babies lose some weight while in the hospital going home. They have their own glucose to wait it out until their mothers milk comes in.

Ares? darn it man, you just spoiled my dinner with that picture GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR,heheheheheheh, I have to act my part, no?............by the way, be sure to give her more mothers milk than anything else, for many reasons.........did they keep some of the "placenta?" from when she was born?.....I hope so.

Yep, all she has consumed is mothers milk. As for the placenta there wasn't much left. Sophia as well as the placenta experienced atrophy due to being delivered late.

When we brought ours home for the first time we looked at each other and said " who is going to stay up all night to watch her" we were so nervous ! ;)

Congratulations Ares! Kids make life fun and teach us patience and all other sorts of things. I know it's a cliche, but enjoy every moment you can, because they grow up so fast!
Our daughter was just over 5 pounds as well at birth. She is a petite 6 year old today, but model-like beautiful, tough (with two brothers), and healthy.
My brother was 2-3 weeks late and weighed 10 1/2 pounds, so some kids keep growing in the oven too. I feel sorry for my mom for birthing him naturally ;D
