Dave Ramsey Gets Ron Paul Supporter Fired
by Matt Collins
I have been a talk radio producer at 99.7 WTN / Cumulus Media since October 2005 until Thursday May 5th 2011. I was the longest running continually employed part-time producer at the station. Even though I have never worked for Dave Ramsey, he brutally and unfairly got me fired regardless of the fact that I was not his employee and did nothing to damage or harm Dave Ramsey or his product. My transgression? I was politely critical of Dave twice in one day on Twitter from my personal account, using my personal computer, and in no way represented or associated myself with my actual employer in my comments or profile.
That’s right, Dave sought out my employer and leaned on them to fire me simply because I was minimally and politely vocal about not agreeing with Dave on a political point. Dave’s ego apparently is so large that does not tolerate much disagreement, and those out of step within his reach get stifled at all costs in true tyrannical fashion. Here is what happened…
Last Monday, after the reported killing of Osama Bin Laden, Dave Ramsey spoke outside his area of expertise on the radio and was discussing US foreign policy, international relations, and other political issues. He also was heavily praising President Obama who was taking credit for the death of Osama Bin Laden. All the while he was on Twitter engaging with the various responses from his listeners.
Here is what he said:
“You ought to be proud of your CIA, and you ought to be proud of Petraeus, and you ought to be proud of your President. President Obama did a fabulous and courageous job on this situation…. I often tell you on this show to pull your head out of your politics and have an original thought, and some of you need to. Your President did a great job on this….
You can feel his spirit; he knew exactly what he was doing. It was reassuring; he had courage in this situation….he just straight up did a great job…. Honestly some of you, who have weird opinions about this, and how young you were, and how stupid that makes you. You’re just stupid some of you.
I’ve been reading some things and seeing some things that (make me think) some of you have lost your ever loving minds. There is good and there is evil, evil is real. It’s not a vague concept, it’s not a Bible story, it’s a real thing. There is one thing you can do with evil, you can defeat it. And it’s not done in a wussified passive way...
The wussification of this country is beyond belief…..Congratulations to our President and to our military, job well done.” – Listen to it here – http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4888190/DaveRamseyForeignPolicy.mp3
And then another segment on the same day he continues:
“This is a day where most of us are very proud to be an American…. You have GOT to be proud of your military today…If you see someone in the military and don’t walk up to them today and tell them thank you, there is something wrong with you…. You’re the one who is screwed up in the head.
They have done an incredible job, our special forces, our CIA, absolutely fabulously done. Hats off to President Obama. Feeling the spirit of his announcement (showed) a sense of wisdom and a sense of courage, just very, very well done. It’s simply that we’re at war and this is how war works. Very well done….
Some of you are confused about things, you’ve been detached from reality and don’t honestly believe that evil is real and don’t believe there is a difference between good and evil. It’s not a matter of perception, it’s not a matter of we made somebody mad so we deserve something, nobody deserves to have a plane flown into a building, no action you take deserves that, it’s just a bogus response.
And that’s you being a wuss and not understanding the balance between justice and mercy…. ‘Judicious’ is a good word to think of about this. There is a sense of understanding that Americans will stay with it until justice is served, and we are not going to quit….
Some of you are too young to have formed an opinion about this because you haven’t lived long enough. You have a lot to say and we really don’t care what you have to say because you don’t know what you’re talking about, and yes that’s a put down. Get some wisdom and then run your mouth.
But this is not about foreign policy, this issue is that if you try to kill my family I will stop you. Don’t try and come kill my family and we won’t have this discussion. That’s not foreign policy, that’s morality. It’s the recognition between good and evil. You’ve got people who are pointy headed and get to have their say on Twitter, but their head is pointed and they think the axis of the world runs through the top of their head and Twitter and FB give them a voice. But they really don’t have a clue, they just think they do, it’s kind of humorous and pitiful honestly.
It’s a really good thing to pull your head out of your politics for a moment and just say that you’re proud to be an American, because this whole thing was well done. “ — Listen to it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4888190/DaveRamseyForeignPolicy2.mp3
And then he spends almost another 3 minutes bashing gold: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4888190/DaveRamseyonGold-May-2011.mp3...
After which I posted the following on my Twitter account:
“Dave Ramsey is discussing foreign policy and he knows not of what he speaks. Stick to $$$ @ramseyshow #daveramsey #tlot #tcot #c4l #yal #tea “
And
“Dave Ramsey doesn’t understand the concept of “blowback” @ramseyshow #daveramsey #tlot #tcot #c4l #yal #ronpaul #teaparty ”
Now please note that I in no way associated myself with WTN or Cumulus Media, my employer, when I posted these statements. And also note that I did not work for Dave Ramsey, and that I did not have any connection to him or his organization. There have never been any restrictions placed upon me as a political activist while being employed at WTN or standing guidelines as to what can or cannot be said or published by employees. After all it’s a political job, in a political environment, often broadcasting a political product; everyone there has a political opinion. I have never compromised the integrity of, or sabotaged, any show, and I have never harmed any client relationship. I have always sought to make products that WTN broadcasts of higher quality by positively contributing in whatever way I can, even if I take issue with the political subject matter.
According to the Cumulus General Manager apparently Dave saw my Tweets, and was so insulted by the insinuation that anyone would dare to disagree with him, even in a polite way, that he dispatched his staff to actually take the time to research who I was. Granted it was not an impossible task, since I used my real name and personal e-mail address, but it did take at least a minimum amount of effort to intentionally determine my identity. Once he figured out where I was employed, according to them he sent an e-mail to Cumulus Media Nashville and he apparently demanded for me to be fired for disagreeing with him.
While I refrain from gratuitously calling names (even though he often does), describing Dave Ramsey as an egomaniac ruling with an iron fist and without compassion would be considered by many to be an accurate statement.
It is commonly discussed that he very often uses strong-arm tactics to achieve his goals in what appears to be a very predatorial manner. Many employees at Cumulus, including management and other on-air talent, despise him and his arrogance.
One would think that this is not the best image for someone who likes to be seen as an example among the Christian community.
The short story is that Dave Ramsey is a megalomaniac bully who attempts to dominate the lives of everyone around him; my situation is a perfect example. I have heard horror stories about how he treats his employees starting with their wages. Even Dave has discussed on air in the past the firing individuals for fairly minor issues and seeming to take pleasure in it.
Dan Miller, an associate of Dave’s who used to have a show on WTN on the topic of employment called “48 Days to the Work You Love” once told me that “Dave routinely pays his employees about half of the going market wage”. Another producer in the industry who had close ties to some of Dave’s operation told me “most people at Dave’s place of employment are expected to work well over 60 hours a week and have multiple jobs –he designs it that way so that when one leaves work for the day they have to have another night and another weekend job”. A few years ago when I was considering applying for a position with Dave’s outfit, I found this to be true.
While Dave’s behavioral advice about finances is indeed fairly decent, his strategy on actually paying down debt and growing wealth through investing is largely inefficient thus prone to criticism (there is plenty of detail about it on the Web if you search). An acquaintance of mine who recently attended one of Dave’s live seminars commented that they ”felt like they were at an infomercial being continually hit up for money to buy Dave’s various products… it was like Dave and his people were hocking something every few minutes in the way that a timeshare salesman does”.
Many of my friends who are listeners to WTN in Nashville confide their opinions of Ramsey with me and the common recurring comments I hear is that Dave ‘has an ego a mile high, a condescending attitude, and doesn’t treat people like a Christian should’. ...
