Bomb kills seven US soldiers in southern Afghanistan

Seven US soldiers have been killed by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, US officials say.

The incident is the deadliest single attack on foreign troops in a month. Nato initially confirmed the deaths but declined to disclose the nationalities.

Earlier, a Nato helicopter crashed in eastern Afghanistan, killing one soldier, officials said.

Almost 200 foreign troops have been killed by militants in Afghanistan so far this year.

Tafsir Khogyani, commander of the border police for southern Afghanistan, told the BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul: "According to our initial information, Coalition and Afghan police went to destroy a Taliban container which had some explosives and weapons. As soon as the helicopter landed and other Isaf forces were patrolling, the explosion took place.

"It took place in Shorabak district 19km (12 miles) from the Pakistani border."

Shorabak district lies between the districts of Registan and Spin Boldak.

Spin Boldak police chief Gen Abdul Raziq told the BBC that insurgents had been cleared from the area only two months ago.

Disputed claim

Meanwhile, Nato-led forces say they have pushed back Taliban fighters in a district in the eastern province of Nuristan.

Local officials said up to 500 insurgents seized the district of Doab on Wednesday.

The international security mission disputes the account given by local leaders. "At no point was the district centre overrun, the Taliban were never in control," said Isaf spokesman Maj Tim James.

Afghan and Nato troops arrived in the district on Wednesday afternoon and carried out a number of air strikes, he said.

"The area remains calm with Afghan and Nato troops very much in control," added Maj James.

It is very hard to confirm Nato's claims or how far their control extends in the district. The provincial governor says nearly 30 insurgents were killed on Wednesday - but questions remain over the whereabouts of hundreds of others.

No biggie, when you add a few to the total it doesn't seem all that significant... carry on.

i think most Americans will never understand this.

they subscribe to the premise of American exceptionalism.

sort of like a Fascist Democracy. they vote for the people who will kick-ass overseas.

whoever they vote for, the US will still kick ass overseas - and get the blowback like these 7 soldiers did.

but the American people get to CHOOSE who sits in the chair and rubber stamps the decision to kick ass overseas.

now that's democracy. :sarc:

My nephew is over there; he could be one of them.

He thinks that he is "fighting terrorism."

I think that if you are shooting people in their own country then you are the terrorist

Needless to say, my sister and I don't discuss this at all.

It's sad really, my neighbors kid signed up last year, in 11th grade. The recruiters go to the schools and hold a seminar recruiting these children. From what I heard, he says that he will get 4 years college degree (free school) and also get paid at the same time. The thing he forgot to ask was what these recruiters don't offer, is that there is more to that game. He has already completed boot camp last summer off school so as soon as school is done this year he gets shipped off.

My neighbor worked on the line his whole life and has absolutely NO CLUE about the reality of this world we are in and as such can not help his son decide if this is good or bad. I feel bad for the kid but who am I, ya know?

My boy on the other hand knows a whole lot more about the real world and says there is "no way I would even consider something as stupid as that"

Good Lord, recruiting juniors in high school?
If my life (or my son’s life) was on line, I’d find out what the agenda was for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It certainly isn’t “fighting for our freedoms”.

When the neighbor told me I asked if his son graduated and he told me the kid was in 11th grade. Talking to a wall so I talked to his kid after and he was the one that told me the recruits come in a few times a year promoting, and a couple months before the end they hold 2 conferences in the meeting hall, 1 for 11th graders and 1 for 12th. All I offered was to inform him that all these wars are illegal, to read and study the constitution and bill of rights and to think twice before he goes in. His mind was made up, guess he met some other 11th grade girl at boot camp and he is committed big time.
