The type of varmint which would do such a thing to an animal would also do the same to a human. Best to just shoot any such varmint at the first opportunity so as to preclude that.

that is the surprising thing. twice recently, i've seen someone with a big dog (140 pounds + ) and admired it, then asked how much food it eats.

a great Dane, and this other dog that looks like a St. Bernard, but more friendly. a goat farmer was using that dog to guard their flock, they had 2 of those kind of dogs ... can't remember the name.

both dog owners said the big dogs didn't eat much more than a "regular-size" (50 pound) dog. that surprised me.

the Great Dane owner said the vet bills were what was expensive. the goat farmer said she gets the vaccines etc. from the farm supply and does a lot of her own vet work.

she also said that goat meat tastes good ... but she did not say, "tastes like chicken." ;D

That's what I am going to do with my new dog......I will treat him like a dog and not like a person and all his shots I will get them at the farmers market instead of paying the Vet $120.00 every time that I take him to him.

For one thing I won't let him in the house, I did give him a nice warm circular soft bed to sleep on and for winter I will put an enclousure around him and a heat pad under his bed.......he is a guard dog and not a pet.............................but............... ...I let him take me for a walk twice a day, the danm thing pulls so hard that I am beggining to jog a little.

I gave our dog a 5-way vaccine I bought at Tractor Supply for $4. Gave it myself. It was easy, dog didn't even wake up. Only gave him vaccines b/c they were required to stay at the kennel we had to put him in.
Only did it once and he didn't get any "boosters". He's been fine. Didn't even notice the vaccines at all. No way I would pay a vet $100 to do the vaccines.

big? not only do you have the shots but also the deworming, ticks, blood test, urine test, cleaning of ear, nail cutting, dog food .......and on and on and on.

My dogs in Cuba ate what I ate and there was no shots of any kind.....once you get them used to all that they will loose their natural fighting inmunity whatchamacalledit to do it on their own.

Our dog has only had worms once, we've had him for 3 years now. It wasn't a huge deal, though I don't know if you can get dewormer OTC. Most worms are easy to spot.

What are the blood and urine tests for?

Nail cutter, trimming, ear cleaning, anal gland draining are taken care of by a groomer. The dog goes about once a month for $35 -- cheaper then a vet by far!

Food is the most expensive expense we have for our dog, we don't feed him cheap stuff loaded with carbohydrates and grains. He eats Orijen http://orijen.ca/products as well as "The Honest Kitchen" http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/

Orijen is about $65 for a 30lb bag, THK is about $60 for a 10lb box (re-hydrates to ~45lbs of food). He gets each once a day. One in the morning, one in the evening. Between the two, we have to buy food about every month and a half. We supplement with raw meat that is on sale in the "this is about to expire, eat it today" fridge section of the local grocer. Meats in that case are like 50-60% off normal prices dog doesnt seem to mind if it is an odd color or starts going too bad for humans. Dog food probably runs us around $80-90 per month. We have a 70lb Boxer. We could "get away" feeding him much cheaper probably, but he's very healthy and we have only had to go to the vet like twice in 3 years for issues. The more expensive food probably saves us $$ on vet bills so it all works our in the long run.
