What is steampunk?
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction. Steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used, often Victorian era, and incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them.
It asks the question, "If technology existed for Victorian Era designers to build <object>, what would it look like?". Where <object> can be anything from ships and cars, to mp3 players and computers. Steampunk also mixes a futuristic spin on fashion and style.
Steampunk is a culture, a fashion, and a style of art.

Steampunk is the intersection of technology and romance. It's fashion, an aesthetic, a genre of fiction, a musical style, and a burgeoning sub-culture.....

I've never actually heard of this. It looks to like the style of art deco meets sci fi. Batman in Gotham City, Gatica, Dark City perhaps.

I was listening to a local Amateur repeater yesterday afternoon and they were talking about Steampunk and before it was even called Steampunk. I thought that was a strange coincidence for twice in one week. One of the people was talking about Nixie tubes which I hadn't heard of before. I have seen them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixie_tube. Kind of a retro thing.

One of the guys was saying his Dad had a Nixie tube watch. Apparently some guy from Apple wears one.

Thanks you schmucks. I have now spent too many hours looking at this crap and desiging some stuff in my head.
I was blissfully ignorant of this two days ago. Now I am actualy willingly looking at computer crap and thinking of upgrading my 11 year old machine and CRT monitor.
It does not help that I moved into a 1910 quonset hut for my new "house"
A pox on all of your houses.

I own a piece of electronic test equipment (an early model HP frequency counter) that uses Nixie tubes for the display. I've always thought it looked pretty cool! I'll post a photo next week if I remember.

That bottom one is a Kubel Wagen (bucket car) made by VW at the end of WW2 on the eastern front fuel was virtualy impossible to find so they converted the VW to run off of wood gas the Kubel wagen was perfectly suted for it because of the rear engine design and you could fill the boot (hood trunk) with a locomotive style maintained gasifier then plumb the wood gas back tothe 25 hp engine.
Sorry for the geekdom but I am a VW and woodgas head and there was lots of these converted during the war.
I am trying to build a briggs and stratton enriched (uses an intercooler for higher concentration) woodgas plant that will fit on a standard pallet.
the bueaty of wood gas is you can run simple engines on wood and you get activated carbon as the byproduct that you can filter things with like water or alcohol.
While steam engines are cool(no pun intended) when it the last time you saw a small working one compared to a lawnmower engine?

Yes I did the same.
Now I am thinking of building a steam engine hybrid car. Build one of these to generate electricity:
up to about 7kW:
http://www.greensteamengine.com/2_cyl_specs.jpg
Have a couple of car battery's for extra buffer for acceleration, and short trips. Power electric wheel engines with the generated electricity, and zoom away.
The good thing about this particular steam engine is that it will probably last for ever with barely any maintenance. Further you can use it to generate electricity for your house when you are not driving... And it is silent, and you can use whatever fuel you want to run it...
Here you can order plans for the construction of this modern steam engine:
