View Full Version : Gold/Silver piggy banks for the kids?

I know a lot of us here have young kids, so I thought I'd share a story of what I've been doing for my kids the past few years. Each one has a regular piggy bank for the fiat that comes in on birthdays, allowance, spare change, etc., but I have a separate, special piggy bank for both of them that I occasionally drop in a silver coin or bullion for birthdays, holidays, or just for the fun of it. For my little girl, I'd forgotten how much I'd accumulated for her over the years, but I checked and to date she has 12 ounces of silver bullion and $3.40 in pre-65 silver coins. I didn't realize I'd been putting away that much, but it feels really good to know that my four year old girl has a silver nest egg waiting for her when she grows up.

Madfranks, I think this is a great idea. If I had kids, I'd do the same. You are an awesome father and your little girl willl be very grateful in the future for you doing this.
Years ago, I stayed with a family in Europe for several days. I was lost, they took me in, and we had a great time together, so I stayed with them for several days immersed in culture.
One of the 'thank you' gifts I gave upon leaving....was a piggy bank for the family's young son. I put a 20 dollar bill in it, did my best to tell the young boy it was a savings so he could visit the US one day. Back then, 1 dollar would fetch 4.5 polish zloties. That went a long way back then. Today, you only get 2.7 zloties to the dollar. Sadly, I realize I kind of shortchanged that kid now. If I had known about gold/silver, I would have dropped an ounce or two in there to get him started instead of paper, which rots away.
Good on you, Madfranks. You are a smart man.

I give my kids a SAE or Morgan, basically an oz. when they lose a tooth. They have decent stashes now. Started that with the first tooth my daughter lost and continued it ever since. I let them look through my extras and they can choose. I think this kind of activity is good for kids. They have held onto their coins and understand it is real money.
