View Full Version : Just a thought for us "city folk" for when TSHTF
General of Darkness

A lot of people like myself do live in the city, and we prepped for TSHTF in a city situation. We fully expect to protect our "castle" in this type of environment, but what if you have to leave? Not because it's that bad but because of disease and viruses?
So what are you going to do? Get on the highways with everyone else? I'd recommend taking a look at fireroads. They're generally well groomed and wide enough to accommodate a truck and trailer and the only thing stopping you is a chain and padlock. Do your research , and don't expect to be received with open arms by people living outside the city. Get a trailer and don't wait till the last moment. Have a plan, if you want to survive.
I do apologize, my paranoia is in overdrive these days.

For those of you who still live in the city, GET OUT NOW!!
You know it's coming...
I left the city approx. 5 years ago, took a HUGE cut on income and work opportunities to do it... but it's undoubtably, without question the BEST decision I've made this lifetime! Living in paranoia and fear is no way to live... my own fear and paranoia were VASTLY reduced after the move.
Cities are death-traps... the LAST place you want to be for the upcoming crash! :o

You have a good reason to be paranoid my friend. The world is going berserk with weather, earth disasters, wars, depression...and you are sitting on one of the largest powder kegs in the country, full of uncivilized rabid people that are waiting to shoot each other.
Hope this make you feel better. Have a nice day!

With respect to the General's original post, here's a suggestion:
Find a plastics dealer in your city. Buy enough 1/2" thick clear Polycarbonate (Lexan) plastic sheet to AT LEAST cover your windshield on your flee-mobile. Go to the hardware store and buy IN ADVANCE all the L-iron, bolts, brackets, drill and drillbits, silicone glue, etc. that you will need to SECURELY affix the plastic over your window(s). When things start looking like they're disintegrating, INSTALL IT ALL. This will provide some measure of bullet-proof protection during your escape. The same thing can be used for your radiator grill (the most vulnerable part of your engine), but you will need to space the plastic out so there's a gap between it and the grill, and engineer some plastic or sheet metal side "scoops" to keep air flowing into the grill area -since the plastic will block most front-entering airflow.
I've tested commercially available Lexan 1/2" sheet, and it stops .223 Rem. and .308 Win. just fine - along with ALL handgun rounds I've tried. Won't stop some .243 Win. or magnum cartridges though... you need 2 layers for that!

++ what gaillo said
Plus your side doors and windows, step back and look at your truck and think of where the thin metal is and then do something about it. some you can place in door panels and let it stay.also behind the seat . As we all know modern trucks the metal in them is just a few stretched out beer cans, so far as thickness goes.
Edit: Also if you are not doing it now, do it. Use inner tubes on all of your tires and keep a good 12v air compressor in your truck at all time, plus tire repair plugs and (hate this shit) fix a flat, so flat tires will not stop you long.

Don't forget the bolt cutters to cut the locks or chains. I watched the history channel the other night, After Armageddon , it was based on a pandemic, and the breakdown of society after..... I would be really scared if I was in the city , hell, I am scared out here, but I am hoping my chances are better.

I would keep the cutters as a back up. If we are using a trailer like GoD is proposing, Oxy-Acetylene torch would be the way to go.

No!
In a true shtf thing oxy-acetylene will become gold that needs to be horded jealousy , Plus bolt cutters if big enough are much quicker to break the chain and then scoot.
Edit: Carry some extra throw away locks , so you break the lock , drive through and then re lock. You will slow anyone on your back trail.

BOL would have multiple tanks. These would be your go tanks. Why screw around with cutters when "wham bam" the shit is open? Knowing the locations of welding supply shops would be a good thing to know too.

In general would agree to a point, bolt cutters are way faster. no hose to deal with , nothing except the cutters. very quick.

you never know what you are cutting into. I have seen some bad results to the head of bolt cutters from a real strong lock. If S.S. chain is used, regular old bolt cutters wont' cut it. They would have to be big ones just to attempt the job.

Hey, man, sorry, but for those of us already out here in the country and under those circumstances, YOU would be the disease vector.
I really recommend you GTFO now "before" a scenario like that occurs, not after.

I am not talking about a small pair of cutters. Also if the chain is s/s the torch will not cut it, melt it maybe but sure as hell will not cut it, no carbon to burn.

You can burn S.S. It's not pretty, but it can be done. Maybe a #4 tip. :o
Plasma is an easier cut.

I have had to use bolt cutters more then once on the other gate, cause I always forget the combo or loose the keys, they were quick and efficient, and I didn't have to load the tanks and hose and make sure I had a striker, those tanks are heavy and cumbersome too !
