If you are looking to buy an atom smasher, have I got a deal for you.
The uncompleted Superconducting Super Collider facility south of Dallas in Waxahachie is up for sale "at a significant discount."
The huge government-backed research facility was partially constructed in the early 1990s for about $800 million.
But a thrifty U.S. Congress pulled the plug on the U.S. Department of Energy project before it could accelerate its first particle.
Since then, the remains of the Super Collider project have been owned by real estate investors who hoped to cash in on the government surplus property.
The investors who bought the property in 2006 paid $6.5 million.
Now commercial real estate firm Newmark Knight Frank has been hired to market the project to potential buyers. The firm is working with investor Hunt Ventures on the sale.
The property up for grabs near FM 1446 at Hoyt Road includes eight buildings totaling more than 200,000 square feet and access to 14 miles of underground tunnels.
Construction of the $4 billion project began in 1991 but was terminated by Congress just two years later when costs of the research center had doubled.
Newmark Knight Frank says the property is now for sale on an "as is basis."
"Owner is motivated to sell the property to a qualified investor who offers the most competitive terms including price and closing contingencies," the advertisement for the property says.
