View Full Version : Is this place dying?

During the week or two before the switchover to the new forum, we had (on average) 50 or so users logged in at any given time. This was from a "pool" of almost 1,000 members.
I've been watching carefully since the switch, and the MOST that I've personally seen logged in at any given time was around 40... it typically stays below 35. We now have over 1,100 members, but many of those "members" are carried-over-copies of GS-US-1 (SMF GS-US) members who have NOT logged in since the changeover, so the numbers are a bit misleading.
I'm not seeing much of a "dropoff" of real-substance posting, the forum SEEMS to have retained the most vigorous and prolific posters - but I'm still not convinced... it's hard for me to believe that "nothing's happened" since the switchover and everything is fine. Maybe I'm being a bit paranoid? Maybe not.
What say you all? Is it going just great? Not so good? Dying? Changing? "Same-as-it-ever-was"?
Inquiring mind wants to know...
P.S. - Yes, I know - "Quantity is not the same as Quality..." that's NOT what I'm talking about.

I've noticed it tailing off somewhat too.
I was about to start a thread asking if it was just me & Dogman that survived the second financial crisis.

I don't know if it is dying or not. I don't see many of the usual posters. I could not find this place through my usual connecting protocol after the change-over. Maybe this is an issue. I finally googled it and got back here.

I've noticed the frequency of posting has seemed to have declined, but put it down to the fact that it
is almost summer and perhaps people are spending more time outside.

To me it looks like it has tapered of somewhat. However I think that many who used to be logged on as members, are visiting as guests, either because:
a) They didn't yet feel the need to re-activate the account
or
b) They haven't set the account so that they are constantly logged on and therefore gets logged out after 15 s of inactivity...
I hope it is one of the above two issues anyway. But it is not completely inconceivable that the hassle of the changeover in itself, caused many members to quit, it is like when they raise the cigarette tax, not really out of reach for most smokers budget, but still many people quit...

At the changeover to VB I was on-again/off-again to return. GSUS has become the fourth or fifth site that I visit when I sign on during the day as opposed to first or second. The place is still interesting but---!
I was in the first thirty-five or so members when GSUS was formed.

maybe you need to expand on this CC
What has you putting this place so low on your list,
etc
I guess I will add, that I am unsure if I like the new VB or not...
whether it is the design/appearance, or what? I am unsure....
maybe it is getting upto speed issues for me?
also I think most people change over time, so their interest do also, so we get the revolving door, some folks come and visit for awhile, and then find something new to play with...
but I am unsure on this whole VB thing....

Gaillo we are not dying. There is a core here that has always carried the water you know that. We have indeed lost some great posters over time, but I'm comfortable this place is still very much a player. The fifty or so of us that are beyond the matrix are operating on a different level than most people - it's possible others are simply intimidated trying to work through their own clarity or don't have the stamina to stay with it and learn.
Unlike most boards that operate on groupthink, here we have fierce independents that don't think twice about mixing it up and we all profit from it. This is one of the last holdouts online like the Wild West and people's comfort levels with content will vary depending on their own perspectives and limitations. It is through these truths people grow and some handle it better than others.
The quality of the content, not the numbers of users, is still what counts as you intuitively know. Between that and your skill keeping the trains running on time it has naturally created a baseline of traffic by the most motivated members. Others move on to softer targets or just lurk as they find their way through enlightenment. The value here far outweighs the volume. Don't underestimate that in your calculations. Many of us hold gratitude for such an opportunity.

I couldn't log in here for a couple of days after the switch. I tried numerous ways but couldn't. I was following the instructions. I contacted JQP about it. I would get a message that a password would be sent to me but none showed up. As Soon as JQP sent me the password in an email I was able to log in. I was ready to say to hell with it and go get some work done. Maybe that's what happened to others here at the switch.

It is summertime.

Me too, good folks indeed.
It's funny, I was unsure about VB, still trying to figure it out actually. My concern was the opposite, that this forum would grow to become a large "city" on th internet, if that makes sense. I like our small town feel here, our little corner of the internet. This site remains one of my first sites I visit when logging in.
Don't get me wrong, growth is good, new membership is good and all. I guess I'm not ready for adulthood yet. :)

Most of the members were never really members to begin with,
how many were active ? Most joined from gim just to read here,
the hidden sections, to get info, see what is going on.
Maybe some people didn't make the switch for whatever reason.
It was easy to do.
I notice a lot of good info in GD going down the tubes and trash lounge
type threads get bumped, noticed that for a long time, if that is what people
want so be it. It discourages more serious people from posting good stuff.
Speaking for myself I don't bother lots of times, and I had a whole list of
threads to bump I never did, I don't think I'm alone.
Forum sliding is real so it is up to the people here to do their job to counter it.
It's summer too.

I had the same experience.
Logs in fine now.
I don't like to complain about another person's property, but I have to say that i do not like any of the color schemes.
I find them unpleasant to view.
I've tried all three and am on the default, but do not enjoy having it onscreen.
Maybe it's just me, but the difference between then and now is just off-putting.
I actually noticed this before Gaillo's post and noticed I was not in a hurry to get back and I think it is the washed out color
of the default and the just plain not liking the others available.
Again, no offense meant but this is my experience with GUS since the switch.

For some reason when I log in and click for it to "remember me" it doesn't work. I have to sign in each time I visit the site and I'm not sure what the issue is. It is probably a setting on my computer but I did not have to keep logging in on the old site.

MAGNES making the switch was easy to do if you had the generic password. If you didn't it wasn't going to happen. I also tried to register under another screen name but was blocked because of my email address that way too.
There are some threads that should be bumped because they have a lot of good info. So go ahead and bump them if you want. That's how I've come across a lot of good info I didn't see the first time. I saw one I think GoD posted while I couldn't log in on what Monsanto is up to and I need to go find it again.
I just got three books to read on the Ukraine and what happened there with the Jews and Christians. I checked out links you've posted on these things and others then followed up looking for more information. I appreciate the research you do and the links you provide. l also appreciate the information and links others post too. Keep the info coming.

When a growing plant is transplanted to a larger pot, it loses a few leaves and temporarily stops growing due to the shock. After a time, growth resumes and the plant enlarges and flourishs. So too will GSUS in good time.
Personally, I'm not posting nearly as much as I did in the past. This is secondary to personal and professional demands on my time, and frankly, some burnout. I'm so busy trying to assimilate the information here, at ZH, Jesse's, Mineset, Harvey Organ and read my subscription newsletters, not to mention hours and hours of medical reading, that I haven't been able to post much. The days go by so fast of late and I feel as if I have no time anymore for leisure, relaxation and reflection. So, I find myself less willing to invest the time and energy in posting.

i can appreciate the possible reasons for the move - e.g. moving to a less expensive host, who offers different software etc.
BUT THERE'S NO SMILEY'S !
of if there are - they're hard to find.
perhaps, some people were feeling less enthusiastic, so when the move occurred, they didn't go along.
i actually did that with a different website. they changed software & i never bothered to upgrade/ re-register. of course, that website was full of PC idiots, so it's different.

It's getting to be Summer time. I'm out and about more. Work is picking up. I've had some family issues to attend to. And to top it off, the VB switch is a major pain in my ass, I lost track of the subscribed threads I mostly followed so I have no basis that keeps my interest. I'm really kind of waiting for the VB switch to get ironed out because right now it is pretty danged kludgy. That's to be expected, I'm not really complaining. I'm juts sitting out and waiting for it not be a complete pain to use.

My own personal opinion.... I'm a bit tired of change. first, the demise of GIM1 and the subsequent signing on to GSUS. Just when I was getting used to that site and really liking it as much as GIM1(except for the posting issues and slowness that seems to have been resolved), now another change; and I don't know why. I don't like the look/feel of it yet. I lost 40 or so of my posts.....

Reportedly, many potential new members lost all interest in joining GSUS during the recent 'Ponce death scare,' as there was no reason to visit GSUS without it's legendary carmudgeonista-in-residence.

If you're not enjoying the new posting capabilities, then you're doing something wrong.
Go up to the Forum Actions menu and select General Settings. I recommend that you:
1) Under "Miscellaneous Options", choose Enhanced Interface. This allows for What You See Is What You Get editing, without all those stupid tags. You want italics, you select your text, click the italics icon, and you actually see the italics. It's great.
2) Under Forum Skin, select Default Style, so that you won't go blind.
3) Choose Enhanced Attachments. You want to attach a picture? Drag the damn thing into your edit window and it's there. It's magical.
I'm still looking for a "Today's Posts" options. Also, there's probably some indication of the threads that I posted to, but haven't found it yet (though I haven't looked very hard...).

Except for the fact that Blavatsky used deception, propaganda, half truth's and outright LIES. Especially with her Freemasonic work.
HARDLY a foundation for Truth.

It doesn't feel like "home" yet, because all the buttons and backgrounds are weird, but at the very least I like some of the increased "search" options, like an ability to search for threads that I have started. I preferred the old software but I assume there are background reasons that make this software superior. It's very good to see so many familar names, so I'm still around - I just don't have much to post. Honestly right now I am focusing entirely on my training and not so much on the web.

Strange list... I mean HEY... I understand why all those other guys are on it - they're all a bunch of whankers! But Gaillo? Seems like his name is out of place on the list... ;D
That sounds like a suggestion he shouldn't resist ;D ;D ;D

When I log in, the screen goes into minimal function mode. When I try to get back into settings to get out of "mobile" mode, I get this:
"We are sorry, this content is not supported via the mobile style.
Click Here to go to the Forum Homepage."
It is a fricken do-loop of death.

Take a cactus from a small pot of stones sand and little soil with almost no nutrients, and hardly ever watered. And put it in a large pot of flower soil, and start water it regularly to keep the soil always moist, and it will soon look miserable followed by death. I don't like VB layout, and how I can't easily see the threads that I replied to and got answered recently. Sure things seems to run smother now with less hangups... Helltrolls I can live with though. Gaillo used to take care of them fine, after a while... Can we have a dickstabbing emoticon phulease! Further I don't get the youtube videos any longer... I post on an Ipod touch...

I just got my password reset and got logged back in, for the first time since the switch-over. At first I couldn't figure out what the heck happened, I could tell that some sort of upgrade to the forum had occurred, but I couldn't understand why that would cause my password to change. I didn't recall seeing any discussion about an upgrade ahead of time, or any kind of announcement emailed out to members, but I stumbled upon the sticky thread with the directions for clicking the "lost password" link and got signed back up. This is my first post since then. I am pretty sure we will have lost a few folks who aren't going to be able to figure out what is going on, unfortunately, since it wasn't a very smooth transition. But I do appreciate the effort put forth by the admins to upgrade things.

I have an overall satisfaction of the move of D+.
After the switch of servers kind of went not so well, I expected a better transition. The bugs we had, I assumed had been worked out already. I didn't expect more lost posts, spammers galore, board display issues, lack of options at the beginning.
I am not harping on JQP, this is his baby. I cant' personally quantify the time involved. I expect it is more of a pain in the rear than I could think of. Especially with a bunch of angry firearm enthusiasts to please. ;D
I guess that since we all pitched in for this transition, I expected more from the get go. Or if there were time constraints on JQP, that he would have asked for some help to get it done right the first time.

I have a few irritations with the change to VB, but I'll work them out myself. By the time I'm comfortable with this VB incarnation of GSUS, it will likely change to something else. I've learned to go with the flow. The forum is not dying. It's like putting a whole pack of cats into new houses. They'll get used to it once they know where the food and the litterbox is.

There's also the WWW.Freesmileys.org site, of which these pages look like they have a lot of cool emoticons:

and

I don't like VB layout, and how I can't easily see the threads that I replied to and got answered recently.
At the top right there's a link called "Settings." When you click on it, it will take you to a page that has "User Notifications" which shows your new private messages, and "Subscribed Threads with New Posts." If there's no new posts to your subscribed threads, and you want to see the old posts, hit the "View all subscribed threads" tab below it.
If you'd like to view the subscription settings' menu, go to the top of the page and hit the "Forum Actions" drop-down menu. Choose "General Settings."
This page will bring up all kinds of things you can change, but the subscription settings are under the heading "Default Thread Subscription Mode:" which is under the bold heading, "Messaging & Notification."
Next to "Default Thread Subscription Mode:" is a drop-down menu where you can choose to subscribe to all threads you post to via email or through the control panel only (which is the place you go to when you hit the "Settings" link at the top of the page next to "Log Out"), or you can choose "Do not subscribe."
But take a look at all the other options under the "Settings" menu; it's got all sorts of features and do-hickeys.
Oh, also when you're responding to a message, under the message pane is another list of "Additional Options," and it looks like you can subscribe to threads from there as well.
Ohh... for you experts.... try changing your settings to MOBILE STYLE.... and let me know how that works. :-)
BTDT, nearly had a heart attack. Hey that almost rhymes! LoL.
OK, so at the bottom left-side of the page is a drop-down menu where you can choose all the various forum "skin" styles in which to view GSUS (I always choose the "Default Style.")
If you choose "Mobile Style" by accident, or want to get out of it, you will notice that the nice drop-down menu has disappeared. But instead of that one, now there's a link at the bottom center of the page called "Full Site," which will take you back to the "black satan" skin style. From there you can choose the other styles again.
BTW, for some reason you can get logged off during posting, very suddenly and unexpectedly. Always, always always select all and copy your text before submitting a reply, so you don't lose it!
Any other questions?

Mamboni, your statement mirrors my sentiments almost to a tee.
For what it's worth, (and it aint worth much) here is my take on things.
#1 I have become increasingly paranoid about the internet, and have zero trust in it.
#2 I am burned out.
Having said that, I have visited this forum every single day since day one. I will continue to do so. Ever since the ass wipe from TN banned me for two years under a different name from GIM back in 08 i have lost much of my admiration for online forums. It is comforting to see so many familiar names here from the old GIM.
Keep up the good work here guys. It is much appreciated.
