I was out hiking yesterday up the hill from my house and came across this pretty fresh pile . . . Coyote or Cougar? The Off can measures seven inches.
What do you think?

Might be risky but you could "collect" it and send it to DNR.
Are there any rules that would be broken by such a mailing?

Not likely a cougar. My guess is a coyote. It is eating meat and vegetation. If you look around for its tracks, you can confirm what it is. Opening up its "package" you can see better what it is eating, possibly parasites and its quality of digestion. The grey color could signify many things.... blueberries, mice, fish.
Its really hard to tell by the picture.... many clues just don't come through. If it is eating mice, there will be bones and hair.
BTW- the tangle of vegetation on top is suspicious. Not being able to see it in person.... could also be human with the grass used as a wipe. And... the digestion of the rest looks too smooth and aged in the gut... like an animal constipated.

I could collect it and take it to the DNR, they're only about 10 miles from here. I was mostly just curious--the scat I usually find has hair in it. This had some grass in it and I know I have cougars and coyotes here. I sometimes find bear scat in the fall near the apple and pear trees. That's a big mess!
Now mailing it to a CONgress critter would be another story . . .

Hmmm, I'm thinking this might be Sasquatch shit. Bag it and freeze it and mail it to DNR(thanks Palani) as proof of Bigfoot's existence.

I think that's a big ole turd.
must smell it to be sure.:-X
I'd go w/ coyote - Strange there's no animal hair apparent. Could have been a clean carrion meat meal. Blood turns dark when digested.

I'm no expert, but I'm thinking this..^. This has Sasquatch written all over it. Send it to DNR (Thanks Palani!) Tell them that you saw something big, tall, and hairy walking away from it. Tell DNR the Sasquatch looked at you, took the shit, then ate your dog, then took off. Sadly the shots you fired at the savage did not hit.

I can't open your attachment for whatever reason, problem my end I guess.
I could tell you if it is coyote, from what I can see seems big for coyote but
apparently there are different types of coyote as well, maybe wolf for the size,
maybe cougar, grey poo with hair in it about the size of a regular dog poo but
drier is usually coyote, we don't have cougars in my parts. You can't really tell
what they are eating unless you are around with fresh kills like some rabbit hair
as evidence, the gut sack, some blood in the snow, etc, usually they eat everything
and even swallow whole, head and paws and all, rats and mice, ground birds,
that's why the poo is so different than other poo, bear is very different, raccoon
varies as well and small.

I was thinking the same about this being big for a coyote. I just checked the WA wildlife website and sure enough wolves have been sighted and found dead up here. I'd love one of the nighttime animal cams!
