not sure exactly when they died, so i let them be

when/if i come across something freshly killed
i'll bring it home, skin it and decide what to do with the meat

Out of curiosity . . . What do you usually do with the meat?

I'm going to cook up the next rattlesnake I find. I want to know if it tastes like Chicken!! ;D

depending on the size of the roadkill
if it's small, i'll probably just boil it after i skin/gut it and eat it
if it's something bigger, i'll put some in the freezer to take out in the bush to cook & eat
this summer, i wanna try to do some bush roadkill solar cooking

I almost had my rattlesnake today. The black lab was fussing and I was ignoring him. I kept hearing a sound similar to an aerosol can. Not the usual rattle. I put the dogs in the house, put on my boots and got a shovel, but he already slithered into my flowerbed! I was so pissed off that he got away. I'm hoping to cook it up before the weekend is over--I just hate the thought that he's still alive. I'll be hunting til I find him now. I know it's not the same as roadkill; but I like fresh meat!

What are wolf worms?

Wolf Worm:

This fat parasite is the larvae of the bot fly and will eventually hatch into an adult bot fly if not removed. Wolf worms are commonly picked up around rabbit burrows as the rabbit is one of their favorite hosts. Most pets are curious about rabbits or are even trained to hunt them, so they may stick their head into the burrow. This is why most wolf worms are found in the neck and head area. Unfortunately, this is why wolf worms can be so dangerous. Wolf worms can actually end up burrowing into the brain or some other vital organ. Many pets will need to be sedated for your veterinarian to properly remove the worm. Improper removal can result in damaging the worm which can lead to anaphylactic shock.

Wolf worms come from bot flies. They deposit an egg in animals fur, and when it hatches, it burrows into the skin

My friends asked why I didn't just shoot it . . . my terraced flowerbeds are framed in rock! I saw a racer and garter snake this weekend . . . The grill is prepped and waiting for the rattler though!

the only caution i would have about a rattler
is how much to cut back from the head to bypass the venom sac

Finally!--my first rattler to roast. He's still wiggling after 15 minutes with no head.

I slow boiled the meat, it smelled a little like fish when it was done.

Salt, pepper and it tasted just like chicken. I think it would be fine in a pinch, but too much trouble skinning to be a regular meal. I may put the next one on the grill.

I'm thinking of hanging the skin out as a warning to the other snakes. >:D
