State Of Emergency In Place

Darby Borough, Delaware County is under a State of Emergency due to a recent uptick of gun violence.

Five shootings in three days led to the announcement Friday night.

Mayor Helen Thomas announced the state of emergency telling residents the gun violence had to stop.

“I Mayor Helen R Thomas declare a state of emergency.”

Officials say the shootings were not fatal and they seem unrelated, but something had to be done to curb the violence (see related story).

An 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is in effect for adults and juveniles for at least 10 days.

Darby Borough Instates Curfew, Darby Twp. Follows Suit

Just days after Darby Borough instated a curfew following a rash of violent crimes, two men are injured in a shooting Sunday evening in Darby Township, the Delaware County Daily Times reports.

The shooting occurred at the Conway Park basketball courts on Hook Road in Darby Township around 5 p.m., police say.

Both victims were shot in the back and transported to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital where one of the men is in critical condition, according to the paper.

Police believe that there were at least two shooters and that they were watching the basketball game, not playing.

”Everybody was just playing basketball,” one witness tells the Delco Times. “Then they started arguing about who had more money. I saw their hands go here (toward their waists), and I got on the ground. Then they just started shooting and everybody ran toward the pond” about 50 yards down a gradual hill from the courts.”

According to witnesses, there were no children on the courts at the time of the shooting.

Like nearby Darby Borough, Darby Township has now instated an emergency curfew from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Anyone found walking the streets after 9 p.m. will be fined $500, reports the Times.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Darby Township Police at 610-583-0909.
