In an effort to attract more nighttime traffic, two Sonic restaurants in South Florida are going to start offering beer and wine later this year.

The one in Miami will sell three types of draft beer, 25 kinds of bottled beer and 10 varieties of wine. The alcohol will only be offered in stores; not to customers who order via drive-thrus.

"Fast food plus fast alcohol equals fast drunks," Michele Simon, a research and policy director at the Marin Institute, told USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2011-06-30-fast-food-restaurants-offering-alcohol_n.htm?csp=obnetwork).

Four Starbucks is Seattle have also began to offer regional wine and beer. Starbucks, which gets 70% of business before 2 pm (http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2010-10-18-starbucks18_CV_N.htm), is looking to attract more customers later in the day.

"The idea of serving coffee all day to hype up consumers and alcohol at night to calm them down sounds like a perpetual motion machine," Professor Robert Thompson told USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2010-10-18-starbucks18_CV_N.htm), who teaches pop-culture at Syracuse University.

Others fast food joints, like Burger King, already offer beer for $4.24 at "Whopper Bars" in Miami, Las Vegas and Kansas City. You can also find a cheaper option at Pizza Hut, which has been selling beer for decades for only $3.

Maybe they are trying to lower the number of chimpout situations..by, you know, offering alcohol. A bunch of drunks at a Burger King on a Friday night is a great idea.
