View Full Version : Saving Oxy absorbers?

I bought 100x O2 absorbers for saving dried beans, rice, etc for my preps. The problem is that I don't need 100x right now.

They came in a vacuum sealed package and I know once the seal is broke, they'll absorb O2 until they're saturated [or I'm sure that's how it'll work, this is my 1st purchase]. So how can I save the remainder so I can use them later?

If you have or have access to a vacuum sealer, seal them, or pack them into as small of a air tight jar as you can. Both way should stop any "aging" or process going on.

I thought that's the best way to do it; just needed a second opinion....

You may even get away with it using a good zip lock bag!

Use a glass canning jar in about 10 min you will hear the lid "pop" as it gets sucked in.

I vacuum-seal them into mason jars in small quantities -- usually about twenty per half-pint. The vacuum takes most of the air out, so relatively little oxygen is left to be absorbed.

I don't think it just pops in by itself. I know there's some heating going on too. What's the process? I've never done any canning. Can I just put it on and use my heat-gun?

I dont even boil the seal lids on the mason jars I use to store oxy absorbers. Never had a problem with it sealing, worked every time.
