TRAVERSE CITY — A squealing sound from his 1999 Chevy Astro van on a trip to visit his mother prompted Douglas David McCallum to ram his vehicle through the Traverse City Social Security Administration’s office doors, according to documents released today by the county prosecutor.
He had been trying to obtain disability benefits from Social Security for a back injury since 2005. He ran over the sign, then took a running start and backed his van into the building twice, going all the way into the building the second time, according to police reports.
McCallum told police he didn’t know what would happen when he slammed into the building, but he did so intentionally.
Grand Traverse County Prosecuting Attorney Alan Schneider charged McCallum, 47, of Kingsley, with malicious destruction of property over $1,000 but less than $20,000, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $10,000 or three times the damages, whichever is greater.
Does he remind any of you of anyone?
